Potty training advice

My son turned three in March and is PDD/NOS. We are struggling with potty training. We will sit for 20 minutes with the iPad (not sure this was one of Apples intended uses for it Chat Icon ) and within 5 min of getting off he pees in his underwear. He doesn't have much speech so it is really frustrating. His EI teachers have him going every 30-minutes and yesterday he didn't go once. He can hold it for two plus hours too. Having 2 other kids running around is not helping me either.

Any advice from people who have tackled this is greatly appreciated.

TIA

DD is PDD-NOS and didn't potty train until she was over 4. It stinks.
We used visuals...lots of them. She was really into animal figurines at point so we'd buy set a Target and put one where she could see it but not reach it. We took pictures of each individual animal and made a chart to hang on the fridge. After she did 1 pee pee in the potty, she could put a sticker under the photo on the chart and get the animal. We then have it set up if she did 2 more pee pees, she'd get the next animal, etc.
Another thing you can try is putting underwear on your son and putting the pull up over the underwear. He'll feel wet and uncomfortable (hopefully!) and it won't ruin your couch, car seat, etc.

We are struggling with this also. DS is 3.5, and has been showing all the classic signs of being ready for a long time. But he will not go regularly, just when he feels like it. We have put him in underwear a few times, but he gets so upset when he pees in them (which usually happens since he will not go to the toilet every half hour or so), the whole process gets thrown off again. Ibreally don't know what to try, we have done sticker charts, ratios, and m & ms, and each reward system works for a bit, but then he loses interest.

Re: Potty training advice

i just went through this and this is how we did it..

1. does he go to a full day spec ed program?

if he does this is how we worked at it...

his school took him every 30 min... if he peed he got his reinforcer, if he didnt he went back to class.... we started in Nov. during christmas break it was tough, i had my DD up my arse and the whole 30 min thing was just not working for me... the school completely understood...

he goes back to school in Jan, they have him still every 30 min... he does great... he goes every now and then, but no wet pull ups... by feb/march we have him in underwear ONLY at school and pullups at home...

my DS does talk (he is autistic) so he would tell us when he had to go.. at home he had a different reinforcer, that he ONLY got if he peed or pooped (we are still working on the poop, but he does get it)

we finally graduated to underwear only. we more or less went by what his teachers were telling us.. i had a potty meeting every month with his teachers...

oh also TAKE DATA.. it will be VERY VERY helpful... i hope this made sense...

its hard for me to type because of all the keys i am missing on my key board

Re: Potty training advice

Thanks so much for the advice. I have the data chart and it is very helpful. I am hoping he gets approved for the 7-week summer program at DDI on Wednesday (he was approved for the Fall, but now we have another CPSE to see if he gets summer). I would love for him to have that structure. We try to do every thirty minutes, but just yesterday we went to a wedding and I know my in-laws can't keep up with that schedule. They did the best they could.

If he spoke his needs, life could be a lot easier. It's going to be a long process, but I am blessed to be a teacher and have the next few weeks off to really hammer it home with him.

Thanks again!

Perfect. I just pulled out the PECS picture and put it on the fridge so he could have easy access to it.

Don't forget to have him hand it to you, even if you have to prompt him hand over hand - even if YOU are the one initiating him going to the toilet. Chat Icon

Re: Potty training advice

Great advice. Sometimes I forget to have him do that when I am the one initiating. Thank you!
