Power lines in the backyard
So we are looking for houses in both RVC and Garden City. I love both towns but some (most) of the houses we have seen have the power wires in the backyard. I don't love it but can get over this but some of them run right above the backyard (not against the property line)
Can these be moved? I would think the power company would be worried about liability.

I doubt it. They would have to reroute them and I think Lipa may at you if asked. You know they stink.

Re: Power lines in the backyard
We have the same thing in my neighborhood. Several of my neighbors have had them moved. They won't move the ones that go along the property line, but they will move the ones that go from that line into your house. They said it was relatively inexpensive. It's on our "to do" list.

Re: Power lines in the backyard
You can talk to an electrician about having the power lines ran underground. I did this in my house. I originally had power lines over my house. I had the moved underground. No power lines.
This was great as I won't have power lines to worry about when I have my hot tub installed.
Any electrician will also move your cable/phone lines and run those underground too.
Then you just need to coordinate with the electrician to have LIPA come out and reconnect the power lines. It can definitely be done.
Also if you have a neighbor's power lines running across your property, you can call LIPA and have those moved and mid-spanned on your neighbor's side. I had to do this as well because I also had my neighbor's power lines ran to a pole that is actually in my back yard.

So I called LIPA and they said they will come and look at it. They won't move for asthetic reasons but for safety they would. There is no guarantee though. So stupid why they were ever allowed to just run them haphazard like that!

They will move them if you are putting a pool or hot tub in. This falls under saftey.
So tell them you are putting a hot tub in.

ITA! We had this done when we moved in, the backyard looks a world of a difference!

Re: Power lines in the backyard
What kind of cost are we talking about to run the wires under ground?

Re: Power lines in the backyard
Wait I'm a little confused- if the whole block has the power lines in the backyard and you tell LIPA you want to install a hot tub, for a fee they can put the power lines underground?

Re: Power lines in the backyard
I don't know how the underground thing works but when I called they said they would come and look at it. If it was a hazard they could possibly add an additional pole to re-route the wires.

Ok so it would move the lines to the front of your house?
I wonder if you can do this if you don't even own the house yet
It would definitely be something worth considering for me since its just a personal pet peeve of mine when there's power lines in the back...I worry about safety and whatnot, plus there's been some reports about high voltage lines causing cancer in children

Re: Power lines in the backyard
Ours are in the front yard, and our electrician did give us the option of running them underground. However, we had a LOT of yard work to do at the time including major tree and bush removal and then eventually sprinkler systems, etc., so we decided not to do it at that time.
Instead we had a mast put on the side of the house so they all run to that one, less noticeable spot than where they were (right smack above the front door).
