Prednisone
Has anyone ever been on prednisone? I just started it yesterday for the horrible ear/sinus infection I have. I just took my fourth dose, and I noticed my face is VERY red and blotchy. I know that it can get swollen, but wasn't sure about the redness. Is there anything I can do to alleviate some of it?

Re: Prednisone
you can drink water to flush your system, but prednisone is heavy duty stuff. You should feel back to normal a day or so after you come off it

Re: Prednisone
I can't believe you just posted this!!! I was JUST going to do the same thing.
Here's my story....2 months ago I went to Egypt. While I was there I came down with a cold and a cough (I and the doctors actually believe that I picked up some type of bacteria or possibly inhaled mold while I was on a river boat for 4 days-great!) The cold dried up quickly but the cough got worse to the point of having what the doctor diagnosed as Asthmatic episodes (coughing fits, wheezing, couldn't breathe, shortness of breath). I NEVER had Asthma and rarley ever have any respiratory issues. She gave me a mild 5 day course of steriods which seems to work ok along with an inhaler. When I stopped the nasal drip and cough came back AND a BAD cold/fever soon followed after. My doc diagnosed me with a respiratory infection and gave me antibiotics. She also referred me to a pulminologist. I went last week and he prescribed me a HAIRY dose of Predisone...6 a day for 4 days then 5 a day for 4 days then 4 for 4 days so on and so on (total of an 18 day course)...It's been a week and I have yet to take them. I am deathly afraid of the side effects but even more so that it causes havoc on a weak immune system. I just got rid of the infection. I would rather deal with my wheezing and post nasal drip than get another infection.
The pulminologist warned me that Predisone is rough on the tummy and will cause weight gain.
How has your experience been??

Re: Prednisone
Several years agao I got a double ear infection. They prescribe predgnisone for me. The only side effect that I had was that it made me a little "loopy"

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been sick so long!! I am actually feeling better after taking a total of 8 pills - I am on an 8 day course, slowly weaning me off them by the eighth day. Yesterday I took 3 doses of 2 pills each. I was fine. My stomach was a little upset, but I think that was more due to the antibiotic I am on (biaxin). However, I took another dose this morning (2 pills) and now my face is VERY red and warm. I read online that it can cause a puffy face look, but for me, it's more red than puffy. I am just dreading going to work tomorrow looking SO RED. The steroid does help - and it will knock your immunity as well. But as far as your breathing/pulmonary issues, the steroid is the best thing for you. As for weight gain, it might make you gain a few pounds, but it's only temporary - it's more water weight that will come off after you're done with the steroid.
If you need any more advice, feel free to ask!

You're so sweet. Thank you!
I might start them tomorrow so if I feel terrible I will have the weekend to adjust.
Feel better!!

Re: Prednisone
One side effect of steroids is that your face can become red/blotchy/flushed. I am a nurse and see it often.

Re: Prednisone
Usually the redness will get better over time, and will go away once you stop taking the medicaiton. How long do you have to take the medication for?

Re: Prednisone
DH has some serious medical issues, and has been on it for a VERY long time. (Almost 2 years). He gained a lot of weight, developed acne on his face and back and his face became puffy.
Just be careful when coming off it. I don't think it can be done cold turkey; throws your body out of whack.
I think DH lowered his dosage by 1 mg each month. He was up to 60 mgs, so it took him a really long time to get off it. He's down to 10mgs.
Good luck!!!

Thanks for your reply! Glad to hear your husband is almost off of it!
I'm only on it for eight days (fortunately) so I'm hoping that there aren't too many side effects (except this redness!!)
I am gradually decreasing my dosage each day - so I will not come off of it cold turkey.
