Pregnancy planning?

My DH and I finally decided to try for another baby (our DS is almost 5). We've been trying for a couple of months and I realized that if we conceived in the next few months we would have a winter baby. I have to be honest, having a winter baby doesn't appeal to me. I like being able to get out of the house, go for walks, etc. But on the other hand I feel like who knows exactly when it'll happen, and is there really a good time? Maybe I should just whatever happen will happen. Please tell me I'm just being crazy. I guess now that we made the decision, I feel ready to go.

Re: Pregnancy planning?

I've had 2 November babies and 2 spring/summer babies...the winter can be hard with illness and the cold, but we've made it through just fine. We still go out and do things, go for walks (bundled up), etc. I didn't "plan" any of my pregnancies, just sort of let it happen but if I was trying, I wouldn't let the seasons hold me up!

Pregnancy planning?

I had planned on a summer baby and started trying in October. Well, I got pregnant 6 months later and now have a December baby. You can only plan so much.

That being said, if you’re not in a hurry what’s the harm in waiting?

I have January twins. I took them out, if it was a nice day I waked at the park and if it was crappy I still packed them up and put them in the car for a drive. You can only plan so much :)

I have a December baby and a March baby.

Although the winter isn’t ideal and it was so cold that winter - I was just happy to have a baby after trying for over a year. And I was too nervous to take him out anyway...

For my March baby - he was born during that unseasonably warm winter. We were out and about as soon as he was home from the hospital - which was really nice.

Don’t worry about it. A winter baby makes things nice and cozy (mom of 2 winter babies)

Re: Pregnancy planning?

Honestly I had a summer baby and we still barely left the house because she was such a nightmare and we were so shell shocked, exhausted and out of our minds.
And then that made me sad because I felt I missed out on the whole summer.
Thinking back it would have been better if it was winter.

You never know when it’ll happen so I personally wouldn’t stop trying for this reason alone. I didn’t (and was due 1/3 with one pregnancy but had a MC).

That said, I am a January baby and I absolutely hate my birthday. It is ruined every year by illnesses, snow storms, frigid weather etc. DH is December, I seriously hate it. We both hate our birthdays.

You could wait but just know it may take some time... I ended up with summer babies (end of June and Mid-August,) but I started trying in the summer, I just so happened to get pregnant in the fall.

First we planned for summer and it worked
Second we planned for summer and ended up with October, which wasn’t too bad

As someone who experienced secondary infertility and has both summer and winter babies, I would say let whatever happens happen. In the long run it doesn’t make a difference at all. And I still got out a lot with my winter babies. By March you usually have a lot of warmer days or you just bundle up.

Re: Pregnancy planning?

I’d just start trying when you’re ready & not wit ry too much about time of year. There are pros & cons to every time of year. My first is a summer baby & I found it annoying to have a newborn in the summer because we were stuck inside when I wanted to be at outdoor public places like the park, beach, etc. and he’d scream a lot so even taking a walk in the stroller was tough. I prefer late winter or spring for a newborn so that by the time the nice weather rolls around, the baby is a little bigger, past the newborn stage & you can do more. Just my feeling on it. Also if I have any more babies I’d love a November or early December baby becaude it just seems like a very festive time of year to have a new baby around.

I was pregnant with an April baby and had a miscarriage. I never thought I’d want a winter baby, but after that (coupled with a medical issue that made me concerned I might never have kids), we were overjoyed to have our daughter in Dec.

We were more lucky with my son and it happened right away for May.

You can’t always plan these things. If you purposely wait and it takes some months to get pregnant, how would you feel?

My daughter took over 6 months to conceive (not counting time due to MC). My son took 1. You never know.

Life with a newborn will be challenging no matter what the season. In the summer sometimes you cant do certain things because you cant keep the baby out in the sun and heat, you have to worry about mosquitoes and ticks. But the good thing is they grow quickly, so whatever season they are born during, I think you will find they actually can start to enjoy and explore a little during the opposite season. My 1st was a Fall baby and we basically hibernated at home with her all winter but then had such a wonderful summer with her because she was old enough to crawl around on a blanket in the grass, dig in the sand, and even go in the pool. Either way, I wouldnt try to plan a pregnancy around a season. I thought my 1st would be a Spring baby just because that's how it would have happened to work out when we started trying to get pregnant, but it didn't work out for several months, and we had a fall baby, but I wouldn't change a thing.

This exactly. I'm a teacher and planned my first pregnancy for spring/summer. Had her first week of June...perfect! Started trying for #2 in June 2016...well, it took 2 years of infertility and IVF to get pregnant. I'm due in 11 days. So, you never know what will happen. I say just go for it! Good luck!

Re: Pregnancy planning?

I feel I did not plan this second child too well. Honestly, it was our first month tracking ovulation (because the OT tests I had were expiring) and I got pregnant. My DD and my DS will have birthdays about 3 weeks apart which is a pain for parties unless you combine them which is a silly reason but still. But hey, what happens will happen. Personally, I wouldn't stop trying because my experience is it can sometimes take awhile to conceive. It took about a year with my DD. Good luck!

I had a winter baby and loved it. Warm and cozy with a newborn to snuggle with. We still went for walks when it wasn’t freezing outside. The only thing that I don’t like about it now that he’s older is we have had to reschedule many birthday parties due to snow storms.

Re: Pregnancy planning?

Winter babies are great! Especially if your older will be in school. It's not like you want to go out much in the winter anyway, and even when you do, the baby is always bundled up. I loved being able to stay snuggled up at home. On milder days I'd take small walks around the neighborhood.

And as an added bonus, it gives you a few months to get your body back to normal before you have to start wearing bathing suits Chat Icon

Pregnancy planning?

My first is a December baby. We just started trying without doing the math, and now December is an insane month for us. It definitely sucks, because he gets bombarded with toys in December, and then gets nothing the other 11 months of the year (we do put some away, but it's just like a lot of hype and excitement all at once). We also missed the kindergarten cut off by a few weeks, so we have a whole extra year of daycare costs. That said, of course I love my kid and wouldn't do it any different.

However, for our second, we definitely did the math when we started trying. Started when it would have been a March due date, but it took a few months so we ended up with a June due date.

Really there are no guarantees, so as much as it would be nice to plan for the perfect due date, it doesn't always work out that way. It could take a while to conceive. Most people I know it took at least a few months to conceive #2, and some took over a year, so planning may be for nothing. Also, even if you conceive at the "right" time, the baby could still come early or late.

I can understand wanting to plan, but unfortunately getting pregnant is not a sure thing and there is no way to know exact timing. You could put it off a few months and hope for the best, but I wouldn't wait. I have a Feb baby and went for walks almost daily.

I had an early September baby the year hurricane sandy happened and wound up having a 7 week old in the freezing cold with no heat. We (I) walked inside the mall most days because I was so cold. Never guaranteed!

Winter babies are harder IMO. My middle is born in Dec and it was a tough decision whether to hold him back or not. It is so cold and you are worried about them getting sick. They will wither be the youngest or the oldest in the class. I much preferred a spring/summer baby. If I planned it, I would've waited a little.

For my first two kids, I had some help getting pregnant. I purposely stopped from mid-March until May because I did not want a December baby. There are a lot of December bdays in my family and friends and I see how much they get the shaft. LOL Not to mention, I didn't need the added pressure of planning parties in the holiday season.

So...I don't think you are crazy. Or at the very least I think you are in good company. Chat Icon
