Pregnant Like Your mom?
Sounds funny right?
I was talking to my mom and she has told me 100 times how much weight she gained with me and how she carried..the whole 9..then after her thyroid got messed up and she lost a ton of weight after I was born..
Do you think that genetics have anything to do with how you will carry, or how much weight you gain or lose after or any other parts of the pregnancy?
Just curious how you ladies are comparing to your mothers and sisters.

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
Its been yes and no for me in comparison to my mom. I went into preterm labor, and she did as well, which is how I found out she and I both have a blood disorder. However she gained 40-50 lbs with her pregnancies, and I have so far gained 9lbs (31 weeks)

so far (and it's early) we are exactly the same. my mom didn't have MS (me either) or hemorrhoids (me either yet). no idea how much she gained, but she lost it all after i was born (i am up 8 lbs after 16 weeks).
she said she looooved being pregnant and so far i am feeling the same way

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
My mom had two good and uneventful pregnancies. Mine has been pretty good so far. She gained much more weight than I did, but I've seen pictures of her 3 months after I was born and she was nice and thin again (hopefully I will have the same thing!)

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
From what I hear, my mom only gained around 25 lbs with each of her pregnancies. Much prettier than my 45 lbs of weight gain.
She had morning sickness with all three of us. I had morning sickness during my first 16 weeks as well.
She loved being pregnant. I do not. I'm curious to find out if my experience with labor and delivery will be similar to hers.
It's definitely an interesting question you raise...I'm looking forward to reading everyone's responses!

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
Im carrying nothing like my sister. she got VERY wide and all of her features exploded when she got PG. Granted I am not even at the half way mark yet, but even still.
As for my mother, only my siblings can tell me. They say that Mom was already QUITE heavy before she got PG with me - they estimate at least over 200 pounds and gained minimal weight. Mom claims to have gained only 10 pounds in her pregnancy with me, and i was 9 pounds and 8 ounces at birth. Makes sense though - women who are heavier to start, really shouldnt be gaining as much weight in pregnancy. I don't think she was heavy with my older sisters or my brother. I am the youngest.
I think genetics come into play in other areas. I really do wish my mother told me that she had cystic ovaries in her pregnancies - would have eased my mind a bit - I have a corpus luteum cyst. It also would have been nice to know that she had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with me. That in and of itself has a link to the fact that she is a type 2 diabetic now. Knowing that, I have been really trying not to over do it on the carbs and sweets. I have moments of weakness, but with my family history of different issues, id rather not take my chances.
(How is THAT for a ramble???)

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
I asked my dad since I haven't really lived with my Mom since I was 8.
He says she had no m/s and pretty easy pregnancies.. BUT she had a very odd craving...
magazines!!!
She'd sit and eat the pages!
Thankfully I didn't pick that cute trick up.
Still I'm pretty lay back.. no major issues other than I can't sleep cause I can't breathe (allergies, etc).
Actually people are saying that I am WAY more lay back now than pre-prego. Some say that's the sign of a boy.
My mother didn't get all that big with my brother but as I am her second I think she put some weight on. Me and my first? As of 14 and a half weeks I've gained a half pound!

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
wow, great stuff. That's exactly what I wanted to know.
Is it true that if you are on the heavier side, you shouldn't gain that much?
My mom told me that she only gained 12 pounds in her whole pregnancy. I was a small baby..5 lbs..
then she lost about 20 afterwards..but she had that thyroid issue.

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
My mom & I have the exact same body. However, I am now up 50lbs (ugh, I know) and my mom only gained 19lbs total with me (and I was an 8lb baby). Not sure if that helps or confuses, but just sharing what I know. Neither of us had MS, but she reported an extreme aversion to red meat whereas I crave ground beef like never before.

In how I carried, yes. small and all in my belly. But I had no m/s and my mom was sick every day for 3 months with all 3 of her kids.

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
something else I heard.
At various times, doctors would tell women to gain a certain amount of weight and then at different times, not to gain too much weight.
I guess it was based on info they got at the time.
My mom was told not to gain too much weight. The doc capped her at 20lbs..try not to gain over that.
that was 40 years ago.
I also hear that every pregnancy is different.

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
I think it does. Like my mom had no stretch marks and I didnt get any with my first pregnancy. My mom also had very easy pregnancies with no sickness and I havent really had that either. During the first trimester i am nauseaous but never throw up. Basically she said she felt really good in all her pregnancies and now that I am in the second trimester I feel really good as well.
Also my mom gained like 35 lbs with all of her kids each I believe. I gained like 33 lbs with DS.
My moms water also broke with all of us and so did mine with my son.
So there might be a comparison.
ETA: My cousin in law got stretch marks with both pregnancies just like her mom did, and her sister did as well.

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
Not at all - She hardly gained any weight and had very easy pregnancies - no m/s, back pain, etc.
I have gained a ton of weight, threw up for a few weeks, and have had back pain, rib pain, etc.

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
I totally think genetics plays a part. My mom had no MS and I had no MS. My mom says I am carrying just as she did. My mom is petite like I am and with a little effort I'm pretty confident I will return to a size/weight I can live with. May not be the skinniest I've ever been, but I am confident I won't become overweight b/c of having kids - with a little effort of course.

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
My mother and I don't have similar bodies in general but she says I am having a pregnancy similar to hers in many ways. We both didn't have m/s or stretch marks, but did/do have linea negra and are carrying small.

Re: Pregnant Like Your mom?
I believe it is somewhat true...
my friend had horrible m/s, and apparently, so did her aunts and mom....
My mom had no m/s or aversions.... she also never gained much weight. she was 5'8" and a size 4 in the early 70's.... and when she was 9 months preggo, she wore a size 14.
yep, you heard right, she NEVER WORE MATERNITY CLOTHES
I was larger pre-pregnancy than mom was at 9 months .... and I've been wearing maternity stuff since about 10-11 weeks.
however, by 13 weeks, I LOST 5 lbs during pregnancy, and never had m/s.... just food aversions.
mom doesn't recall any discomfort at all during pregnancy... which makes me suspicious!
