Pretty upset (long) - job & TTC...WWYD?
DH & I were ttc all summer up to 2 months ago when I started my new job. We were going to start up again after I had been there for 3 months for maternity leave purposes. I work in the apparel industry dealing with samples/trims/etc before they get manufactured. Last week, we were all called into a meeting & they let us know that starting asap we will have to start using lead detector guns on a daily basis on all of the samples to check for lead. We were told that these guns give off a small amt of radiation & are totally safe as long as you do not shoot them at yourself. Also, we were told that if anyone is pregnant, they cannot use the gun. I'm not pregnant but I planned on ttc at the end of March. Then, my boss announces that only my dept will be responsible for using the guns (there are 2 of us in the dept)
My problem is that now I am afraid that I will have to tell my boss that I plan on ttc & tell her that I will not be able to do a function of my job(for 9 months). I'm scared that I may get fired b/c of it. I really don't want to tell anyone that I am preg until I am 3 months b/c I obviously have issues ttc & I don't need the office knowing my business. I feel like I have no choice though b/c I am afraid to use the gun when I am in very early weeks of pregnancy. wwyd?

Instead of specificly telling your boss your TTC plans, I would tell them, in private, that there is a small chance you might be pregnant and would like to make sure before you handle the guns. Or ask them if they have any protective equipment (ie lead apron) you can wear when handling the guns.
I don't think they can fire you for that. TBH, I really think that they should be requiring people to wear protection, especially if you are in your child-bearing years, when handling anything giving off radiation. I would see what OSHA has to say about it honestly.

I would speak to my doctor about it and see what she says.

I wouldn't say anything to the boss until you are actually pregnant. You never know how long it will take you to get pregnant.

That's what I think I will do... tell her as soon as I find out, even if i'm only like 3/4 weeks preg. Although I am scared about being around the radiation for the time that I don't know that I am preg.
ps-Thanks, I saw your reply about first response on the preg board.

Re: Pretty upset (long) - job & TTC...WWYD?
i would definitely speak to your doctor (OB) about the risks of harming your TTC chances using this gun thing.... your job should have a way of protecting your body...
i do agree with pp - you have no idea how long it will take you to 'get pregnant' - but you should be aware of any dangers to your ttc chances.
It also can't hurt to try temping for a little while...while it won't show you SOLID info until you have a month or so 'in'....you will know a day or 2 prior to AF's arrival - because your temp will drop....that in addition to early testing may help your mentality...

I have to say, from a non TTC end, I wouldn't use anything that had radiation-how does your boss know for sure? And I believe if they try to fire you for that, they would have a BIG lawsuit on their hands. I definitely agree with PP to talk to your OB first, but I am thinking more about cancer and radiation (I would personally tell him to use it for a year and then if nothing happens to him, you would consider it). Under HIPAA laws, you do not have to disclose your plans to your boss and if you do, they can not fire you for that. But the radiation thing is what scares me, KWIM? I am saying for your own good. Good luck!
