Private Hospital Room????? **UPDATE**
I am delivering at St. Catherine's in Smithtown. How do you go about getting a private room? Should I call now and just ask someone at the hospital, if so who would I ask for. I also assume it is gonna cost me?
OK I called, and they only have 1 private room on the unit and they cannot reserve it nor can you pay for it. She said they try to keep it for patients that may need special precauctions. But you can request it when you come in and if it happens to be available they may give it to you. OTHERWISE: She said all the rooms are either 2 beds OR 3 beds! OMG I don't want to be in a room with 2 other people!!!!!

Re: Private Hospital Room?????
If your hospital offers private rooms, then its a first come first serve basis. You tell them you would like one when you go to the hospital for delivery and then remind them once your baby is born.

Re: Private Hospital Room?????
You can request one at the time of delivery and as the PP said, it's based on availability first come, first serve.
I'm delivering at Beth Israel Medical Center in the city and it's $500 night extra.

Re: Private Hospital Room????? **UPDATE**
I go to LIJ in New Hyde Park. With my first before delivery I asked for a private they said nothing was available the next morning the other 2 women in my room left and I was left alone in a huge room and didnt have to pay for a private. I was very lucky lol. Baby number 2 came around I asked again before delivery for a private. I got one thank God. From what I understand they are usually first come first serve. I paid $300. for my private room.

Things changed at LIJ. For my 1st in 2005 the private room was $300; for my 2nd in 2007---yeah, $500/night!!!

Re: Private Hospital Room????? **UPDATE**
I delivered at St. Catherines - both times shared a room with 2 other girls. You definitely don't get any rest between the nurses coming in and if you are in a room where the girls there either: -Breastfeeding (the nurses bring the baby into your room) -Want to have the baby with them all night.
One thing you definitely want to request is a room with a shower - not all the rooms have a shower so its definitely much nicer having it in your room than having to go and use the one in the hall.
Its really not too bad - I survived........twice

Re: Private Hospital Room????? **UPDATE**
This is a major issue for me, too. I will be delivering at Winthrop in August. Any idea how a private room works at this hospital?
My first two deliveries were at North Shore- Manhasset, and the shared rooms were a NIGHTMARE. The noise was an issue, but mostly, the cleanliness of the bathrooms was horrendous both times. I am not a princess in any way, but there was so much of the blood everywhere in that bathroom from my roommates that I not only felt grossed-out, but that my health was possibly compromised. (sorry if that was TMI!)
My third delivery was at Mercy, and I was given a private room. There are certainly better ways to spend the money than on an upgrade, but my bad experiences at NSUH convinced me that my health is worth it.

I delivered Hayley in Stony Brook, you have your own room but have to share the bathroom with the room next door. If you are lucky like I was you won't have a neighbor in the next room and get the bathroom all to your self.
St Charles you share with 1 woman and you can request the private room when you get there, not sure of the cost.

St. Charles, like previous poster said, is only 2 per room (and I was there when it was at capacity and there were not any rooms with 3 women). You share a bathroom with your roommate. THey do have private rooms, not sure of the # though, and it is an extra charge. You cannot reserve in advance, it's based on availabilty after you deliver.

Well I know what I have to pack in my hospital bag: Clorox Wipes/Lysol and gloves! I didn't want to spend my hospital stay cleaning but I will if I have to!
