Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
does anyone know how much they go for and if they are worth the price?
I noticed that the rooms at NSUH are very plain and was wondering if the private rooms are any better?
TIA!!

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
Wow, $500....that is a lot.....
Pickles - yes, NSUH in Manhasset...yeah, the rooms are very plain and "boring"...many of my friends/family delivered there so I have been there so many times....they also don't have a pull out bed for DH to sleep on....
I was very surprised to see the rooms considered it is one of the best hospitals on the island....on a good note they are renovating the maternity ward (elevator area) so maybe that will include the rooms as well...

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
I had two very bad experiences room sharing at NSUH - mostly pertaining to the cleanliness/unsanitary conditions of the bathrooms. I would highly recommend trying to get a private room.
Good luck with it!!!

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
The rooms that are $500 and up are in the "new" monte wing. A regular private room is about $250-300 a night.

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
When I gave birth to my DS this March I inquired about a private room and was told that they start at $550 and can range anywhere from that price all the way to $1250 a night! I was able to see some of the newer private rooms while walking to and from the nursery and they were gorgeous (hardwood floors, flat screen T.V.'s, mini kitchens and tons of space)!
One of my nurses told me they plan on redoing the entire maternity section modernizing/updating and making all rooms private rooms/bathrooms......but am not sure when it will be completed!

I really want a private room but there is no way that DH is going to spend that kind of money.

I got the same quotes...except they didn't tell me the rooms for 530 were semi private. They also told me the newly renovated rooms come with a better "menu" option...IMO all hospital food stinks so no prize there.
Although I love the idea of my own private room, I don't think its worth spending over $1000 on a semi private room for two days. I'd rather spend it on my new born.

I find that all very twisted. It just seems wrong for a hospital to have tiers of accomodations like that. Don't tell me that the women in those 'suites' or upgraded rooms don't get better nursing care than their counterparts in insurance-paying multiple-patient rooms.

nope they STRESSED that they tell everyone the options but the same nurses provide the same excellent care and no one should feel that they are pressured into spending that money or that the are any less of a person being in a semi private room.....they were actually very nice about it.....i just when i heard the prices and dh said u better take it all in bc this is the last time u will be stepping foot anywhere near these two kinds of rooms

This is the difference. Plus you get a private nurse. I think its terrible that a hospital charges extra money like this. Pretty much each hospital (not all) on Long Island charges extra money for private rooms.

I should right??? too bad I don't have her bootie to back me up!
On a serious note, I think they are crazy for charging so much money...$1,000 a night?? it better be nicer then the Ritz in Paris....lol.....I guess when I do the tour of the hospital I will check them out..

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
Honestly its crazy. I live very very close to South Nassau in Oceanside and apparantley all the rooms there are private and you don't get charged. I wanted to deliver at NSUH bc of its reputation but this is leaving me with a really bad taste in my mouth...I have the $$ to spend on a private room but I TOTALLY agree with the PP that said I would rather spend that money on my newborn than have a room with a private nurse. We just gave birth, you would think we should be treated like royalty no matter we're Jlo or anyone...UGH!!!

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
Check with your insurance company, they may cover the portion of what a 'standard room' costs and you may only have to pay the difference.
I delivered at LIJ, and the privarte room was $450 I think? And the insurance company reimbursed us for the portion of a standard room cost - so we only had to pay the difference.

My friend called North Shore to inquire about this and the billing department at North Shore said that they won't accept that. You HAVE to pay the $550 (or more depending on the room you pick) for the private room. Well my friend had her baby in May and paid for the private room ($550)--she just got a print out from her insurance co. of what was paid to North Shore and they billed the insurance $2,500 for the private room and the insurance only paid $2,200. That's only a $300 difference NOT $550 like she was charged. She's going to call North Shore to complain even though she thinks she won't get anywhere. But it's worth a shot. I was excited and happy to deliver at North Shore, but now I agree with the previous poster who said all of this really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Also, a pediatrician who DOES NOT accept her insurance ended up seeing her child and she got a bill for his services too. So just b/c North Shore accepts your insurance does not mean all the docs within North Shore accept it. So I would call your insurance company and see what their policy is re: out of network providers.

Was this her pediatrician or the hospital's on-call pediatrician? If it was her pediatrician I could understand that, but If it was the on-call doctor, the hospital needs to rebill the insurance company for an in-network doctor. That is a circumstance beyond the patients control - she didn't choose an out of network provider the hospital did it on their own and she should not be held financially resposible.
I had this issue when I had an MRI a few years ago. I fought it because I made an appointment at a place with an in-network doctor and got the whole bill covered.

Just curious you said that 530 for semi private rooms? What is that considered versus the regular rooms? B.c that sounds like you are paying to have a roommate? I must be reading that wrong.

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
I thought a semi-private room was a regular room they give you, and if you wanted a private room you paid the difference. I was lucky when I had ds I had the lady leave the following morning I gave birth to ds and then was alone til the 3rd night when I got the moaning roommate who spoke no english. This time around I would like a private room, recovering from a csection isnt fun when you have a roommate!

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital
I delivered twice at LIJ, obviously not NS, but part of the same system. I had 2 c-sections. Being the spoiled brat I am I wanted a private room. In 2005, we paid about $250/night for 4 nights. In 2007 they jacked the price up to $550 I believe. I conveniently "forgot" to fill DH on this ahead of time, so he evicted me out of the private room after 3 nights and already informed me that I would have a roommate for the next baby. Oh, and at LIJ even if you have a private room, you share the bathroom with the room next door. From what I understand, insurance picks up the cost of a semi-private aka roommate room.
I'm not sure why this would leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth regarding the hospital--maybe your insurance co. In most hospitals, a private room is a luxury and personally, I don't feel insurance should have to pay for it. My next delivery (if and when) will be at NS, and all my luxury's been used up as far as my DH is concerned , I will have a roommate the next time!
