i went on the maternity tour and they said 750 for private rooms and 1000 for suitesChat Icon ....semi private is 530....all of these prices are per night...hth

Just curious you said that 530 for semi private rooms? What is that considered versus the regular rooms? B.c that sounds like you are paying to have a roommate? I must be reading that wrong.

530 is the max that ur insurance co will cover so there is no out of pocket charge unless ur insurance co has different rules....beyond the 530 (which would be the 750 private room or the 1000 suite) it would be out of ur pocket...hth

I delivered twice at LIJ, obviously not NS, but part of the same system. I had 2 c-sections. Being the spoiled brat I am I wanted a private room. Chat Icon In 2005, we paid about $250/night for 4 nights. In 2007 they jacked the price up to $550 I believe. I conveniently "forgot" to fill DH on this ahead of time, so he evicted me out of the private room after 3 nights and already informed me that I would have a roommate for the next baby. Chat Icon Oh, and at LIJ even if you have a private room, you share the bathroom with the room next door. From what I understand, insurance picks up the cost of a semi-private aka roommate room.

I'm not sure why this would leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth regarding the hospital--maybe your insurance co. In most hospitals, a private room is a luxury and personally, I don't feel insurance should have to pay for it. My next delivery (if and when) will be at NS, and all my luxury's been used up as far as my DH is concerned Chat Icon, I will have a roommate the next time!

so insurance pays for a semi private room that NS charges for, so then what room do you get for no charge,...I'm just really confused now Chat Icon Chat Icon

Also, a pediatrician who DOES NOT accept her insurance ended up seeing her child and she got a bill for his services too. Chat Icon So just b/c North Shore accepts your insurance does not mean all the docs within North Shore accept it. So I would call your insurance company and see what their policy is re: out of network providers.

Was this her pediatrician or the hospital's on-call pediatrician? If it was her pediatrician I could understand that, but If it was the on-call doctor, the hospital needs to rebill the insurance company for an in-network doctor. That is a circumstance beyond the patients control - she didn't choose an out of network provider the hospital did it on their own and she should not be held financially resposible.

I had this issue when I had an MRI a few years ago. I fought it because I made an appointment at a place with an in-network doctor and got the whole bill covered.

Nope not her pediatrician and I agree with you 100% This makes no sense! She is fighting it. The hospital said it's not their problem. The doctor's office is actually working with her and is going to try to deal with the ins. The problem is that her ins. has a $200 deductible for out of network providers.

I was told there was NO charge for semi private rooms. You have to pay to be in a private room. The cheapest is $550 a night and goes up from there.

It makes no sense at all. That's like going for an emergency c-section and the on call doctor or anesthegiologist was not in-network. umm, you had no choice. Please tell her to keep fighting it. All they have to do is rebill the insurance company and the hospital will get paid.

WOW! That's nuts! Where I live ALL the hospitals have private rooms for maternity. I stayed one night with DC in the children's ward and we had to share a room- ick! I can't imagine sharing after just having a baby! Chat Icon

Re: Private Rooms at North Shore Hospital

All hospitals that I know of-- you have to pay more for a private room-- unless that is the only thing they offer.

Well worth it IMO.
