See what you're missing here is a key component. You don't understand the pain, because you don't understand systematic racism, white privilege and oppression. I wish I could give my black skin to you and your child, for one week. Walk in my shoes, especially in Long Island. Where there are places I want to go but don't, because I will get stared at like I don't belong. (And I can name a ton of places, trust me). Or try to look at a house for sale, and the neighbors look at me with the "we don't want black people living here". Or send my child on an interview for a job, where I know they may be rejected, not based on their education or resume, but because they just don't want a black person for the job. Please stop acting like this is all so sad for the business owners...I understand it is, I do, but they have some things that have been denied to people of color for so long, and that is painful and sometimes the pain can no longer be taken.
I don't have a solution to any problem, but I can say most of you wouldn't switch places with me ever...you wouldn't want the baggage I carry everyday. Have some empathy. Have some real conversation with black people. Watch a damn movie, read some books, something about how the system has beaten us down for generations. And Stop commenting on things you have no way of understanding. Just be empathetic.
Please Im not being harsh, I live in LI, I have seen it all, and it has been a hard life, yet I am educated with a very good salary and I can understand what people are going through. That pain is gut wrenching.

Perfectly and eloquently stated.

Re: Protests

They arrested the man 4 days after he killed someone. Stop asking why did the riots happen and calling them animals, and start asking why did this happened and why did it take riots & protest to arrest arrest this POS cop?

I think we should be protesting. Blacks have suffered enough and it’s time to stand strong. Can’t be silent anymore...

So burning down a police station and looting and rioting is the answer? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes. Revolution isn’t pretty. But peaceful protests have done nothing. I’d say this sends a strong message that this won’t be tolerated anymore.

Wow. So destroying where you live and work is the answer.

Cut the snide shit. What’s your answer since you’re so damm smart?

Not destroying things at least and they are doing it here in NY and plan a protest today in Hicksville. This didn’t happen here and there is no reason to put police cars on fire not even where it happened. Looting is not the answer either. I get the protesting and MLK protested and didn’t
have to get violent and loot. I get being mad as I think it is horrible what this police officer did, never condoned him or the others with him at all. I don’t condone people acting like animals with no morals and ethics to destroy innocent people’s livelihood. Business owners are standing at their doors with guns for looters. People are losing their businesses and people are losing their jobs. What did Target do to George? Nothing but these animals think it is ok to loot and burn it down. These are not just black people getting involved. Be angry, be very angry how this was handled. DON’T ruin other people’s lives who didn’t do anything wrong but live in the same town OR in another state. It is disgusting and I am scared for this country that people can’t protest in a civil manner without destroying things.

Wait. You really think it doesn’t happen here???? It did and does everyday in some form. This isn’t about one incident it is about the fact it is happening everywhere.

There are a bunch of white privilege comments on here!

I know I have white privilege but I choose to try and do good with it and stand up against racism. It happens everyday and every community!

If you watch this without crying, you have no soul.

What if this was your dad, husband, brother or son.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nAHo4zkaiU0&bpctr=1590796815

This was no accident. This was a human delighting in the murder of another one while his fellow cop aided and abetted. He had 1,000 chances to get up and make another choice. Once the person is down and not fighting, you cuff them and send them to jail. Death penalty is a complex process for judge and jury not an ignorant beat cop.

This brings a bad name to all cops. They should even be more angry. It spits in the face of our real hero’s.

I’m disgusted today. I don’t think this can go on as this isn’t a world that’s worth living in.

I just don’t understand why he’d put his knee on George’s neck and for that many minutes?!? Supposedly that’s not even what officers are taught to do. And why, why in the world wouldn’t any of the other officers tell him anything?!? Why wouldn’t they alert him on what he was doing?!?

Pure, relentless HATE and discrimination.

As for the burning of buildings and other damaged property, it's monetary and can never amount to this mans life and the grief of his family and friends.

All of it makes me so sick and everyone I know cannot stop crying. May God help us all.

Corporations and businesses have insurance. People should stop prioritizing capitalism over human life. In BK (where I have immediate family), police were posted up by the hundreds at Barclays. Waiting for a fight...waiting to prevent? How do you look at it? People I know in real life who were there giving a completely different account of what the media is showing.

You can't get a life back, and one that was so senselessly taken as part of a long line of violence towards black bodies. I am sickened and angry and holding space for my black and brown friends. They are not OK. They are not OK.

Corporations and business have insurance? That’s your reply?
Lose your livelihood and wait for Insurance to kick in to be able to feed your family. See how that feels.

The riots make zero sense and it’s wrong. You are punishing the innocent. Wrong wrong wrong. Nothing will make it right.
Insurance ... that response is fuking laughable.

Yes. Revolution isn’t pretty. But peaceful protests have done nothing. I’d say this sends a strong message that this won’t be tolerated anymore.

Well let's see, the scumbag POS police officer got to go home to his family after MURDERING a man in broad daylight. No arrest. He got to kill a man and go home like it was all in days work.

It took THREE days of rioting for that POS to be arrested and charged. So it would certainly seem that rioting was the answer. Had he been arrested on the scene, much of this could've been avoided. But as usual, it's hate and racism before justice.

If you're more outraged over the rioting rather than the fact that an unarmed, handcuffed black man was pinned to the ground by THREE officers while one pressed his knee into his neck until he was DEAD, then you need to check your moral compass.

When peaceful doesn't work, what recourse is left?

I never said he shouldn’t have been arrested on the spot nor not outraged over what happened. My point is innocent people are losing their businesses and jobs. How would you feel if your life savings in your business went up in flames and people were looting everything you worked for, for something YOU didn’t even do?

How would you feel if every day of your life you were oppressed, demonized, and treated like less then?

How would you feel if it was someone in your family being held down on the pavement crying out until they died?

Try and understand WHY this is where things end up. Try and understand that when you're NEVER heard and NEVER treated as an equal you resort to rioting. You don't have to support but at least understand it.

Insurance does not cover looting and that man in the video who lost it all is lucky people are kind and started a gofundme for him. Just because you have insurance doesn’t make it right. What if someone burned down your home for something you didn’t even do? You are ok with it as you have insurance? You lose everything you worked for your entire life. And yes a life IS more important but I am scared that so many people are siding more with the looters and fire starters on this site.

So your answer is peaceful protests, got it. What has peaceful protesting done for blacks in this country in the last 70 years? Colin Kaepernick was annihilated for his non violence approach by taking a knee. You seem to like arguing and twisting words, so I will reiterate. NEVER said violence and burning buildings is the answer, but I have seen this coming for years! I honestly can’t see how anyone is surprised. You can only be provoked so long. I don’t know how I would be behaving if I lived in that community. I’d like to say I’d handle myself with dignity and respect and not vandalize others, but I also don’t know what it feels like to live in a society where you are oppressed, lack opportunities, and are constantly fighting for you life in a society that was structured to keep you down. I am WHITE so I don’t know how it feels. I will tell you my husband is black and my children are black it pains me to have to prepare them to live in a society that is going to condemn them and judge them. My innocent babies who only know the difference in skin color as that, just skin color. I live in a VERY cultural diverse drown. We get a bad rap but there is such a strong sense of community here which makes me love it. We need to restructure our society or things aren’t going to work. We need to stop being so segregated and Long Island is the worst. I. think you should spend some time in some low income, impoverished ,black areas and get to know these people and their struggles. It’s easy to judge when you are here in some cookie cutter hallmark TV movie town and the biggest concern what the other ***** on the PTA said at the soccer game. There is real suffering going and real socioeconomic disparities. I can’t watch it anymore Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I find it ironic that the world cares about small businesses and businesses owners now. But it was ok for the government to destroy their lives in the name of Covid.

They arrested the man 4 days after he killed someone. Stop asking why did the riots happen and calling them animals, and start asking why did this happened and why did it take riots & protest to arrest arrest this POS cop?

Yes he should have been arrested that minute, ITA but destroying your town solves nothing.

Well they arrested him, so I guess it solved 1 problem.

Why do you think solely in terms of money and not in terms of why this is happening and not the deeper issues. Why does it only come back to money and businesses? I take it you're a sbo but this way of thinking is kind of toxic. If you're not able to see that these protestors have done everything possible to be heard in every way white America says is "the right way" and still they are being killed, but all you think about is a random bar and grill you'll never go to in a state you'll probably never visit, that's weird to me.

I think it will delay opening because if there is a spike in covid cases due to people gathering to protest, then of course it will delay things.
1 person from that pool party in the Ozarks, Missouri already tested positive..thats one cluster thats now potentially infected...we wont see the spike until 2 weeks from now when case numbers increase...so ye, we are so fu#&%ed now because violent protesters are going to cause case spikes.

Damn that George Floyd for dying, he’s going to mess up our numbers now.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Protests

Here's a solution we can start with:

White people can stop being assholes and calling the cops just because they can't stand to share a space with a black person. Like a black family minding their business at a bbq. Or because you're asked to follow the law and leash your dog so others can bird watch. Remember laws? Those things that only apply to black people and only black people are required to follow so it can be justified why they were killed. And the countless other ridiculous videos of cops being involved for no good reason. You know full well by now that getting police involved when it comes to black people can lead to an innocent's death, but I guess that's part of the power some white people are tripping on.

Here's another suggestion:

I know it's hard for some white people to resist that urge to kill a black person for offending you with their skin but try to refrain from pretending you're a vigilante out for some imaginary justice, that you're suddenly the town sheriff and murdering a black man while he's innocently jogging.

Here's another:

When there's VIDEO FOOTAGE of a police officer killing an innocent black person don't wait for your city to burn to ashes before you arrest the criminal. Don't sing lullabies to him while he lays his sweet head and hold his hand (in solidarity of course!) while you surround his home wearing riot gear. Arrest that motherfkr on the spot, THEN you investigate. It holds the criminal accountable. It sends a clear message to the community that law enforcement does not condone or support the officer(s) actions nor will they be tolerated, and it shows that heinous officers are not above the law. None of this paid suspension bull.shit. And arrest the other officers that stood by instead of protecting them at an undisclosed location.

Another thought:

Stiffer penalties for officers that abuse their power so these criminals don't walk after their useless trial that everyone knows is just for show.

Boy I'm just full of ideas today. Doing these things might just extinguish the flames that are bound to keep raging with the next cold-blooded murder.

Me too, I was giving the benefit of the doubt because I didn’t understand what this had to do with Covid.
