PSA HOT DOGS
I share this every once in a while. My aunts 3-yr old nephew passed away a few years ago while vacationing in Disney with his family. He choked on a hot dog. Such a tragedy. An avoidable one.
PLEASE cut hotdogs lengthwise into four strips and again into little pieces for toddlers
Another tragedy in today's news:

Oh how awful for your family - I am so sorry that happened - I am so neurotic about choking. This devastates me - especially on vacation in disney

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
I'm so sorry for your family's loss Thank you for the PSA. When I was about 7-8 years old, I choked on a hotdog at a family BBQ, I couldn't breathe and couldn't alert anyone. Thankfully my grandfather noticed that my face was turning colors and he performed Heimlich (sp?) and I threw it up. It was by far one of the scariest experiences of my life.

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
I swear, this is my biggest fear. To be that parent and to be so helpless, trying to do everything you can. Its TERRIFYING for both the parents and the child. How awful!
I just sent the article and the link on foods to avoid from the article to my parents and in-laws who tend to think Im neurotic and being dramatic when it comes to stuff like this and they blow me off. It drives me INSANE bc its SO dangerous!

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
I am so sorry.
For a lot of reasons I do not serve hot dogs at my house and this choking thing is one main reason for this - I nearly dropped dead when my daughters preschool class had them on the menu for parties several times last year.
We have been to parties where they are served and DD who is 4 has pleaded for one as all the other kids were eating them so I did allow her to try one but only after I had basically shredded the damn thing - she wasn't bothered and only took a few bites ( probably because I took all the good out of it for her!)
Hate them, hate them, hate them.

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
OH dear god...This is my fear too. We just had a another choking incident with Noah ( who is 3) the other day. I was about to get into the shower when my mother home on lunch burst into the bathroom with Noah in her arms screaming " he's choking" ...He was eating watermelon and a piece too big lodged in his throat. I had a moment of panic and I hit his back 2 times HARD...He started to cough ...I hit him so hard he had red handprints for an hour on his back. I was so scared. ( unfortunatly this has happened many times...the Dr doesnt know why he is so prone to choking.)
I swear I want to avoid hotdogs till the kids are 15 now..and popcorn and grapes.
Its such a helpless thing.
That poor poor family. I dont know how I would go on

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
I'm so sorry for your family Last July, my brother's friend lost his 14 month old from choking on a hot dog so I am very conscious of this and tell anyone I see feeding their toddler a hot dog.

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
Thanks for posting. I see so many people who do not cut them, or assume their 3 year olds can handle whole hot dogs. DS won't eat them, but if he did, they would definitely be cut up. His grapes are still cut up for the same reason.

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
That is so sad
I am especially afraid of hot dogs - I will NEVER forget when my (then) 8 month old son threw up hot dog chunks that he had "gotten a hold of" at daycare - you better believe I marched in there the next day and said ***** !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
so sad.
I think choking is my worst, worst fear for my kids.
She hasn't had popcorn yet (for that reason), and I don't plan on giving it to her anytime soon.

Re: PSA HOT DOGS
I don't understand all the fear and avoidance of hot dogs as you can choke on any food that isn't properly cut up and then chewed thoroughly

Because a hot dog, cut incorrectly (sliced) is the exact size of a toddler's windpipe and can easily be lodged.
Cut up properly - they're fine to eat (aside from the fact they have no nutritional value but that's not the point).

bc its the perfect sized disc to get completely lodged in an airway and block off any hopes of air getting through and it is then harder to dislodge, same for grapes.
Its not about how its cut up compared to other foods, its about the specific shape and size of it, NOT cut up properly that is the hazard. There is a reason that hot dogs and grapes are the top foods that children choke on.
