PSA: How often do you get your hearing checked?
I decided to make an appointment with an ear, nose and throat doctor to see if I needed my ears cleaned out. My iPhone tells me that the volume is high all the time. I seemed normal to me.
I was told that I have started experiencing hearing loss (after a hearing test and examination), and my right ear is worse than my left. It isn’t bad enough for hearing aids yet and I think I hear OK. I just have problems when someone speaks low, but I think everyone has that. They want to check (the German word is control, kontrollieren, for ‘check’ and I always laugh when they say “we will control you again in one year” ; I ask the doctors to speak in English, so I can completely understand at medical appointments) me again next year.
Anyone else have this?

Well, I’ll be 45, and I asked the doctor if it was because of my age and he said no. He explained it could be hereditary. I have it on both sides of the family, but my dad has it. My dad is also 77 and stopped going to the doctor 15 years ago because all they give is bad news and wanted him to go get his heart checked regularly for his low blood pressure problem. So who knows when it started?
It could be go very slowly. I also spent a very large part of my youth all weekend in clubs like Arc, Webster Hall, Sound Factory, Exit etc. And many, many concerts. I used to wonder why people wore ear plugs. Now I get it.
Last time I had my hearing checked was in elementary school.

Yeah, it feels completely normal to me. I do have problems understanding students sometimes, but a lot of that has to do with their pronunciation and if they are far away from me. I wear headphones to hear them better for my online classes.
But nothing really hurts my ears. The only time is when a teenager popped a bubble from her gum loudly into my ear after I asked her to please stop popping bubbles in my ear on the bus. She did it on purpose and laughed with all her friends after I asked her to stop.

PSA: How often do you get your hearing checked?
I have chronic ear wax buildup, so I go to the ENT to have iit removed every 6 to 9 months or so. (PSA - do not use Q-Tips!!) When I went to my first appointment, about 10 years ago, they gave me a hearing test and it was fine. Ever since then, I just get the wax removed. Even with the wax, I can hear just fine.

Same! LOL. Sometimes someone will mutter something under their breath from two rooms away and I'll hear it and they'll be amazed.

Yeah, I had no problems with wax build up. They said that was fine. Maybe I should get a second opinion?

PSA: How often do you get your hearing checked?
I have had a hearing loss since birth- diagnosed at age 4. I wore hearing aides all through elementary and stopped in high school bc I was always teased about them. I made it though college with out them. This last 2 years have been hellish for me since I realized I lip read primarily and everyone was masked. I broke down and got hearing aides. Just a PSA- almost no insurance covers hearing aides. They are not considered a necessity. So 5,000 out of pocket hurts but I am amazed at all the sounds I have been missing!

PSA: How often do you get your hearing checked?
Funny you bring this up-- my dad has hearing issues and it's gotten worse lately- we are trying to convince him to go a doctor for it. DH & DD have recently been telling me that I talk too loudly and I do sometimes mishear things. DH has been bugging me to get my hearing checked. Maybe I should make an appt with an ENT.

Ths is what bugs me about our medical system. I think hearing aids should defintiely be covered! Same with vision insurance. Thankfully, I have vision coverage and even with that, my eyeglasses cost over $500. I literally couldn't walk out of my house without my glasses. I couldn't work without them. Yet, things like viagra and birth control are covered!

It is quite frustrating. At least with vision there typically is vision insurance which helps a little. I was shocked how expensive hearing aides are. Plus the audiologist said they typically need to be replaced in 3-5 years. i told her I'm taking really good care of these. I'm only 45, I can't imagine having to shell out 5,000 every 5 tears for the rest of my life.

Yeah I hear the very littlest thing while others don't hear it. My husband has/does listen to music (lots of heavy metal) loud so I blame that lol.

Hearing aids are partially subsidized here. I’ll have to call and ask.
ETA: I’m also sorry you have gone through this your whole life.

lol, yup that is me. Maybe that is why I like quiet so much too. I listen to music in the background when working but if I have a window open, I would rather here the sounds out there or just nothing at all.

You should ask your doctor and insurance provider. I don’t think it is a non-US thing. None of my doctors here suggested it. I just booked an appointment. If you catch it early, you can stop further damage with protection against loud sounds. I’m not exposed to loud sounds too much, but now I’ll know to just have ear plugs in.

Do it! It’s really easy. But my doctor was a bit scary and wore a full hazmat suit. I didn’t mind and I guess he knows more than me being an ENT (called HNO- throat, nose, and ears here).

This is so odd, because they check my hearing every year during my physical. Are people not getting regular physicals or are my doctors/insurance extra? My DH hearing isn’t the best and they monitor it every year.

I don't get one as part of my physical.
But my last one was about 7-8 years ago.

Check-ups are different here. I am not really familiar with the US system so much because I barely used it. I know the Australian and German system better. I know you can get a check up every 3 years after 35 in Germany. GPs in Australia do Pap smears….
When you go to the doctor if you are sick, they sick you down at a desk and type up a report. You don’t get a gown. They see what they can do and schedule you for another appointment or for a specialist. You need to check with what your insurance will cover. It also depends if you have public or private. However, I can say I broke my shoulder in Germany over 10 years ago and I paid a total of $50 for the complete care (no surgery).
But one thing I can say is usually dental care is not fully covered in a lot of places. So that’s nothing new.
ETA: doesn’t answer your question, sorry My point is get them checked. I thought it was just wax buildup. Turns out my ears are nice and clean.

Never got one, my dh is older and never got on either and my mom never got one till recently when she asked for one but she's in her 80's. Some doctors do extra stuff to charge more to insurance. My mom has even caught them charging hers for extra unnecessary stuff.
