PSA: New Preggos-Go to the Dentist Now!
Let me start by saying that going to the dentist to have my teeth checked and cleaned has never bothered me before.
I am now 31 weeks, and I had a cleaning and check-up yesterday, and OMG! The cleaning was sooo painful, really the worst it has ever been--apparently I have some gingivitis which lots of pregnant women are prone to, and that makes your gums much more sensitive.
So all I can say is, go early and avoid this if you can--don't wait till the end like I did.

You should go to the dentist every three months when you are pregnant for cleanings. Dental hygiene is very, very important for pregnant women.

I went for my regular cleaning in the first trimester and my gums bled a lot more than usual. The dentist said this is normal for pregnant women, though and told me to make sure I floss 2x a day.

I was suppose to go today and I canceled because I don't feel well!! I'm going in two weeks! Did you guys get x-rays while pregnant? I don't want them to-but a lot of people say its okay.

I broke a tooth in half literally 2 days after my BFP, I needed a root canal & had to have an xray. You will need medical clearance from the OB for anything beyond a regular cleaning (& maybe even for that). I was allowed to have exactly 2 xrays. They won't do a full set like at a regular checkup. If they do an x-ray, they will put 2 of those lead aprons on you for extra protection. Make sure that you reinterate that you are however many weeks along. Also, my dentist does digital x-rays (less radiation) the assistant was actually in the room w/me instead of outside like w/ regular x-rays.

Re: PSA: New Preggos-Go to the Dentist Now!
My dentist did not do the x-rays since I am pregnant and not having problems with my teeth. She said she would rather wait and do them after the baby is born, which is good since I didn't want her doing them anyway.
Ask your OB about this, but personally, if nothing seems to be wrong with your teeth, I would prefer to wait on the x-rays.

Re: PSA: New Preggos-Go to the Dentist Now!
My dentist did not do x-rays, but I had my regular 6-month appointment when I was only 6 weeks along, so he told me I had to come back in 3 months. He told me pregnancy wreaks havoc on your gums and teeth.
That appt. was a few weeks ago and let me just say that it was one of the more painful cleanings I ever remember - usually they're completely pain free. I'm glad I went though, and now I don't have to go back again for 6 months.

I just had mine cleaned last week at 29 weeks - I was told the same thing about pregnancy gingivitis.

Re: PSA: New Preggos-Go to the Dentist Now!
My dentist told me the same thing about coming every 3 months once I got pregnant. I'm due to go for my cleaning in November and I'll be just about 13 weeks.
I read somewhere (can't remember where) something about not using mouthwash during pregnancy. Has anyone heard of this?

Wow, sorry to hear it was so painful for you!
I only just read about how 60-75% of women are at risk of "pregnancy gingivitis" and called my dentist immediaetly out of paranoia...going for a cleaning tomorrow afternoon. I hope they don't all hurt for you like that!
