She definitely plans on a masters and is even toying with the idea of Psychiatry with a doctorate. She is one determined girl and has already planned on the next 10 years of her life. I think at minimum she will finish a masters. Can I ask where you all went to school?
Psychiatry requires an MD so she would have to plan on attending medical school then try to match into a psychiatry residency. I have a BA in psychology from NYU. I loved the course work but the job prospects with a BA were awful. I ended up taking a position at a neurorehabilitation facility--and while I learned a lot the pay was terrible. I considered applying for a PhD program in psychology but ultimately decided against it. I went on to complete a MS in clinical nutrition--I taught and did research for a year and then got my PhD in Neuroscience. I found that I enjoyed the basic science more than the patient interaction- it is hard to plan the next 10 years before experiencing any of the courses.
Yes, I agree. I keep telling her that she may change her direction once she is at school.

I got my BS in Psychology from Stony Brook also. Loved rat lab!
I intended on continuing my studies there, but took an analyst position on Wall Street after graduation. Eventually settled into IT.
Best of luck to your niece! She sounds very motivated!!

Re: Psychology Majors
I have a B.S. in Applied Psychology from NYU. My original intent was to get my Masters and become a school counselor, but I ended up not going back for it. I work in Sales now. To be honest, there isn't much you can do with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. It's too broad of a degree to specialize in anything.

Psychology Majors
I have 2 DD's...one majored in Psych undergrad and went to NYU for her Masters in Social Work. She is now a highly paid (at least compared to me!) High School Social Worker on LI. DD#2 majored in Criminal Justice undergrad, also got her Masters in Social Work and is now a Psychiatric Social Worker for the Criminal Courts in Suffolk. I am all for our kids going for what interests them most. Yes Psychology majors undergrad have a much harder time if they do not want to continue schooling. BUT...if they are truly intent on the field, they will find the way.

Re: Psychology Majors
Has she considered becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner ? That's a burgeoning filed where she would get to do a lot of what interests her without having to go to medical school. All my friends who are physicians, are of the opinion that PA, Nurse Practitioner is the sweet spot in medicine today.

BA in psychology. Went straight to PhD program from undergrad and got my Masters along the way. I'm now a psychologist in private practice but I've worked in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities also. As many have said, an advanced degree is necessary to anything in the field.

This is interesting, I will mention it to her and have her look into it. Thanks!
