Public Donation of Blood Cord
Has anyone done this?
Part of me wants to but I was wondering if anyone has experience with this. I don't have the $ to do the private collection of my DC blood cord. I was thinking that if I do the public it could possibily be a benefit to someone else. Also, as I understand if my DC ever needs the blood cord there's no guarantee that he'll get his but will get someone that matches. Is that right?
TIA!

I had wanted to do this also but I delivered on a sat and the hospital was only able to receive donated cord blood sun-th (i think those are the correct days). Check with the L&D wing at the hospital where you'll be delivering.

Re: Public Donation of Blood Cord
I donated. Cryobanks International worked with us even though the hospital I delivered at doesn't do cord blood donations. It's worth checking them out. The only catch is that if you deliver between Friday 3 pm and Sunday 3 pm they cannot accept the cord blood due to some courier issues. Here's their link:

I did this at NSUH with the triplets cord blood. When you donate you arent guaranteed you will receive your blood but you will get a match. I just felt I was blessed with 3 healthy children I needed to give back and donate their cord blood.

Wow, they let you donate? The place I went through told me I could not donate with twins because it too easy to get them mixed up.
Because of this, we decided to bank privately, but we didn't get enough anyway.

You too? Even worse here, I was told I didn't have enough in the cord to save any at all. I was so disappointed and was all registered and ready with CBR. I still can't believe I never got to save any.
To the OP, I would go for it. You have nothing to lose, only possibly can gain by saving a life.

Re: Public Donation of Blood Cord
I think it's a great idea, I just wish more hospitals would be more flexible to take the donations.
When I delivered at NSUH@Manhasset, at the time there were only a few days per week and available times each day. If I delivered out of that schedule, the cord blood would be thrown out. Seems like such a shame.

I was so disappointed and was all registered and ready with CBR. I still can't believe I never got to save any. This is actually great. I means that your DC got to reabsorb all the iron rich blood that was in the cord. That's the more preferred benefit to babies anyway...so, no harm, no foul....

Re: Public Donation of Blood Cord
Thank you for all your replies. I'm definitley going to look into this. Hopefully I never have to use the blood cord but I definitely would love to donate and give someone else who needs it the chance.
Thanks again.
