Pumping Questions

I am going to start having DH give DD a bottle of BM at night, but I am not sure how much to give her. How much did your DC take at 6 weeks??

Also, what once increments do you store your breast milk? My LC told me to do 2 oz so not waste any. I have been doing that but now I have tons of bags in my freezer.

How many ounces should I expect/hope to get when I pump after feeding DD? what about when I don't feed her but am pumping?

TIA!!!!

Re: Pumping Questions

He has only gotten a pumped bottle a few times but I store it as it comes (usually 3-4 oz). He takes 4oz & that usually just holds him over for a bit. By 6 wks I am sure he'll want 5-6 oz

Re: Pumping Questions

We are giving one bottle of formula at night (I BF the rest of the feedings) and DS is taking between 4-5 ounces. We give him a 5 oz bottle and he usually finished most of it. He is 5 1/2 weeks.

How long is he sleeping when you give him the formula feed?

Re: Pumping Questions

if I pump after I feed her I get about 3oz. If I pump when DH gives her a bottle I easily get 5oz.

I have been giving her 3-4 oz at a feeding, but I think she wants more, so we might up it to 5oz.

I bag my BM depending on what I pump, when you make a bottle I start with 3oz and can always add more.

Re: Pumping Questions

My DS has only ever taken 3 oz bottles since he started daycare back when he was 11 wks old. He is now almost a year. Breastmilk changes and adapts to meet the needs of the baby as s/he grows. The exception to this was when he was going through a growth spurt. Then he wanted a little more. However, I still kept his amounts at daycare roughly the same and then he just nursed more when we were together. This also helped keep my pumping supply up.

Here is a link from kellymom that goes into more detail:

I had to jump off so I didn't get to fully answer your question.

I froze the EBM in 3 oz bags since that's what he was drinking in daycare. (I didn't really build up a stash before I went back to work.) I was always pumping more than he was drinking so I built up quite a stash.

Every woman is different in the amount of BM that she is able to express. As long as you're getting about 3 oz, I think you're fine.

When I was on maternity leave, my DH gave a bottle before putting DS to bed and I pumped. I would pump 7 oz at that time. I also found that even after the bottle, DS wanted to nurse. But it was really that he wanted it for the comfort, not for hunger.

When I returned to work and started pumping it was a slightly different experience. I pumped 3 times. I always got the most at the first session (usually 6 to 6.5 oz) and then it decreased each time throughout the day. I expressed anywhere from 13 oz to 20 oz (total). I would say that my average was about 16 oz.

Re: Pumping Questions

DD is 8 1/2 months old and has never taken more than 4 ounces of BM in a bottle. When she was 2-8 weeks she took 2oz sometimes 2.5oz

Re: Pumping Questions

At 6 weeks DS was eating about 4 oz at a time. I stored the bottles in 4 oz increments. Now at 13 weeks, he is taking 5 oz so I store it that way

No longer than when I breastfeed. Usually about 21/2 or 3 hours.
