Puppy Mill Question
Why doesn't the American Kennel Club do more to stop puppy mills? Someone who is uneducated about them might see the dog has an AKC pedigree and think that the breeder must be ok. The AKC must notice the same person registering a large number of litters, or that the same mother has a large number of litters.

Re: Puppy Mill Question
Millers are not legitimate with the AKC, and most times you do not find out the papers are fake until you try to register. Also, many people who have a pet and not a show dog will not even try to register. There have also been "fake" Kennel clubs with very loose standards of practice that basically fuel the Mill industry by givving meaningless pedigree papers. I can refer you to websites where you can ask these kinds of specific questions, and maybe get some ideas...
Some of these sites might have graphic pics on them, but you can usually navigate to information without being bombarded. Prisoners of Greed
Puppy Mill rescue
There are more, but these are good to start with.

So if the dog has real papers it is not from a puppy mill? Usually. Some millers use several names and if they are not one of the breeders to be checked, then some papers can slip through I would think. In addition, even though the AKC has a regulatory function, it is not their sole purpose and I can imagine that their resources to keep it 100% legit are sparse. From what their website & the letter to Oprah says, they only have 15 inspectors that check the ligitimacy of the whole of the US. That is insame. There are HUNDREDS of people monthly that shut down PMS & BYBs....
It is also hard to tell what "real papers" are until you try and register a dog.
In addition to the Papers, you also need to follow a checklist of red flags that might tell you if your breeder is breeding responsibly. The locked topic at the top of this forum outlines most of them pretty well.
