Re: PVC vs wood fence?

i could be wrong but i would think pvc would...there is no upkeep to it and it lasts much longer then wood can...if you are thinking about getting a new fence i would call now - most places starting mid march they get more expensive bc of spring..i only know this bc i just shopped around for a new fence and am waiting for it to get installed..hth

Re: PVC vs wood fence?

I think PVC has more value due to the low maintenance and the warranty is much longer. It will appeal to more people.

But not everyone is a fan of PVC. Some prefer the look of wood.

In any cases, a newly fenced yard is very appealing to buyers.

Re: PVC vs wood fence?

it really depends. i know our neighbor got PVC and its pretty damn cheap looking. It cracked in a few places and just looks eh. I think overall as long as you have a fence people are happy.

I am really starting to love the look of warm fences with this style. But there is a huge part of me that loves the white picket fence look as well.

Re: PVC vs wood fence?

i think pvc adds more value. they also have a trex fence now. the trex looks more like wood if that is what you are into. wood rots and the upkeep is annoying.
we got pvc last summer and are verrrry happy with it. we priced out wood as well and it wasnt worth it.

Re: PVC vs wood fence?

the pvc was almost double (there are different grades, you want the strongest -illusions is a good brand of pvc and many companies carry it)
my neighbors got a wood stockade 2 weeks before we moved in (we are here over 1.5yrs), their fence has bowed, sagging, and looks like crapola. wood should look good for about 3yrs if you maintain it, and is usually replaced every 7yrs.

pvc was worth it for us. we got have the yard last summer and can hopefully get the other have this summer :)

I don't think either add a significant enough value for you to take into consideration because it is really a matter of preference so I would just do whichever you prefer.

Personally, I HATE the PVC fencing but I am sure other people hate wood fencing. In my area, iron and iron with stone work seems to be gaining in popularity.

I really like that style too. It offers privacy and styling as well.

To me, PVC has a 'clean' look but just so blah and it seems like everyone has it.

I think it really depends on the style of the house too.

I would not think that a fence, PVC or wood, will add much $ value to a home since it's not necessarily attached or permanently fixed to the house. It can be easily replaced. The presentation might add value in the mind of a buyer, if it happens to be their taste.

Re: PVC vs wood fence?

I think its called a Shadowbox Fence. I noticed on MANY of the design shows on the west coast you see these types of fences. I have been reading about wood fencing a lot and notice it really depends on the wood that is used. Many wood fences come with a guarantee as well and can last decades. My parents wood fence was up for 20 years but yea you had to go outside and screw in section from time to time. But you can buy that design in vinyl as well. I am glad we don't have the money yet for a fence because I am really torn.

BTW I love iron and pavers!!!

Re: PVC vs wood fence?

I think it depends on the property location and the neighboring properties.

I guess to me it's the same as vinyl siding vs cedar siding? It depends where the home is located and what neighboring properties have. Some people value real wood fences or siding over anything vinyl b/c they feel it's less obtrusive and more natural in the landscape setting.

In my old home I used vinyl siding and fencing. In my new home I plan on using cedar fencing (I already have cedar shakes/siding). Wood fits in better with my neighborhood and area but sure, PVC lasts much longer of course.
