Q for those who have BTDT re: Moving Companies

Hi ladies - I have very little to move as I am in a one br. apt. In fact, the items that I would *need* a moving company for - as opposed to what I could just move myself are only 5 items. I would be moving from nyc to LI (approx 30 min w/o traffic). Are there companies that charge by the item? What is the cheapest deal you think I can get and are there any co's you recc? TIA!

We used Ken's Moving and Storage and they were great. Most companies charge by the hour.

Don't use Flat Rate Movers. Used them for Queens to Suffolk and while they were reasonably priced, the pulled the truck up too close to parked cars and tore off my superintendent's son's mirror and then moved the truck away from the car (but I saw them do it from my window!!).

And they broke one of my bookshelves or didn't unload some shelves for it ... I don't remember.

A lot of co will charge you a minimum $.

I would honestly get a rental truck for only 5 items and hire some friends. I even hired someone who needed extra cash one time. Some people are looking for extra cash. Just be careful who you hire.

We used Men on the Move & they were wonderful. I believe they charged us by the hour though but it was reasonable.
