Q re: Getting puppy/schedules
We're finally ready to commit to a dog. I'm off from work this year, but will be going back in Sept. I'm a bit hesitant about getting a puppy though b/c he'll be used to someone being here 24/7 & then in a few months that is going to change. I'm afraid of destruction, etc.
For those of you that have dogs and work did you initially crate the dog when you were working/no one was home?
Did you let them stay in one "safe" area?
Any tips, etc?

Re: Q re: Getting puppy/schedules
While the pup will be used to someone home now, he'll also get used to when you do go in an out... you'll crate him.
It will be easier for you to get him into a routine now and you have the time now to build him up to being crated for longer periods of time gradually before you go back to work.
With my two, we crated from the minute we brought them home... Every time we left the house, in the crate they went....and it was a comfort to them.

Re: Q re: Getting puppy/schedules
We crated our puppy in the beginning when we were not home. We started small. I f we were going to dinner and she would be in there for like an hour or two. We took her outside right away when we got home.
We both work but are close to home so we can let her out during the day. We now don't have to crate her and she is 6 months. She waits for us to let her out.

we crated straightaway. Chloe is 1 and still goes in the crate if we're leaving.
Why not practice with your pup before you go back to work? Stick him/her in the crate while you're home to get them used to it.

Re: Q re: Getting puppy/schedules
Crate training all the way! It becomes their safe place. Now remember, just because you'll be home with puppy all day, you need to go out to the store, appointments, social etc... Puppy will gradually get used to you leaving for short periods of time and the anxiety will pass. Trust me, the day I went back to work the dog was fine and I was a hot mess! I cried my face off! Getting my dog was the best thing I ever did! g/l!
