Question about a Bris??
A co-worker of mine's wife just had a baby on Monday. They had a boy and apparently the bris will be this Monday coming up.
A couple of questions..
- Is it true that you don't invite people to the bris? When people find out they just show up? - this is what another co-worker said
- I sent a gift when the baby was born, but do you send a gift for a bris?
- Should I go? I've worked with this guy for almost 5 years now. We are friendly, but not outside work.. what do you think?
Sorry if these are ridiculous questions, I've never been to a bris...

Re: Question about a Bris??
It's true that you don't get "invited". It is seen as the holiest of traditions in the Jewish world, and a bris even supercedes Shabbat if it falls on a Saturday.
I don't think that you have to get another gift, and you should only go if you feel like you would want to or are close enough. These ceremonies can get cramped, so I'm sure that if it is at their home or a small place they won't mind the people who do not show up.

Re: Question about a Bris??
I've always received verbal invitations/notification. And I did bring/send a gift.

I've never seen written invites, but rather just getting a phone call with the details (time and place). Traditionaly, you do not invite people to a bris.

Re: Question about a Bris??
You don't get a written invitation. Since it is done 8 days after the birth of the baby (which is usually a surprise) invitations don't go out. Its always word of mouth.
Gift- if you sent a gift when the baby is born, you don't need to send another gift.
Do you have to go, that's up to you. Some people invite the whole world, some people want it to be just close friends and family. Its a very holy and slightly traumatic event. You have to determine how comfortable you will be there.

Not Jewish and have never been to a bris, but... If you're NOT friendly outside of work, then I'd definitely not go. Would you invite this guy to your child's christening or communion?
