Question about chronic colds/ear infections and rectal temperature...
Since DD started daycare, she has had a runny nose. We brought her to the dr. for her 9 month check up and he said that it was normal for "daycare babies." A week or two later, she woke up with a phlegm-y cough and we brought her back to the dr. She had an ear infection and was put on 10 days of amoxicilion (sp?) No sooner than she finished that medicine, was she even worse. We brought her to the dr. who told us she had a sinus infection and put her on 2 weeks of augmentin, which she just finished this past weekend.
Last night she was "off" and this morning we weren't sure about bringing her to daycare, but she didn't have any major symptoms, besides crankiness, so we did.
When we picked her up, she was coughing again and when I took her temperature rectally, it was 99.5. My question about that is am I supposed to add a point to that? I heard somewhere that you are supposed to add a point.
Anyway, we are bringing her back to the dr. tomorrow, but I am worried! She's been sick pretty much since she started daycare and while she loves it, I can't help but worry about her wellness.
So, any Moms out there with advice/similar situations/answers to the rectal thermometer question?
Thanks,
Erin

Re: Question about chronic colds/ear infections and rectal temperature...
I feel your pain! DS was sick A TON last year. It was his first year in daycare and everytime we turned around he had a fever.
As for your question, rectally you do not add a point. Also a normal rectal temperature is between 97 and 100 degrees. 99 is not a fever rectally but I would still let the doctor know. It is considered a fever rectally when it is over 100.4
Hope this helps! Hope DC feels better soon!

you dont add for rectal
You add for those (like me) who use under the arm methods instead.
As a daycare mom, I can they do get sick a LOT. But they have fantastic immunities from it.

At that age Chris was sick constantly in daycare
Rounds and rounds of antibiotics...if we had a 1 week of no sickness it was great---its so hard

Ronan seems like he's sick ALL the time. Its weird too because he was EBF for 5 months while D had to go off BM because of allergies at 3 months and D seems a lot healthier. I think some kids are more susceptible to germs. I read Vit D can build up the immune system and also giving yogurt with live cultures. HTH
