Re: Question about eBay Shipping Charge

Yes, the price is excessive, but the hook is - you can't put a price on the "handling" part of S&H. Obviously, shipping was $4, but he can put any price on his time and energy to get to the post office to mail your package.

Ave - can DH file a paypal dispute if he's already paid or, I presume, the money is already in the seller's account?

One of the posters above mentioned that they can see padding the shipping/handling costs a bit to cover listing fees, gas, etc. If you read the link that Babyboy posted earlier in this thread - ebay specifically states that you cannot cover those costs (and others) in your shipping/handling fees.

ETA - FWIW, seller did make some money on the tix.

I charged a flat rate for all my auctions. sometimes I broke even, sometimes I made a little extra (not much at all), and when I first started selling, I actually lost some money on shipping a couple of times.

Re: Question about eBay Shipping Charge

Yes you can file a Paypal dispute up to 45 days after you pay I believe.

This is key: What shipping "method" was advertised in the listing? Did it just say "Standard Flat Rate Shipping". Or did it say something specific like USPS Priority Mail.

If it specifically said Priority Mail or UPS and he shipped it First Class, then you can definitely go after him.

I do agree with PP though that say you agreed to the shipping price. Remember on ebay the "real" price of the item is total + shipping.

I buy bubble wrap from a very reputable ebay seller at least once a week. He has the bubble wrap listed for a price of $8.95 and shipping is $21.95. Now I know for a fact the shipping isn't $21.95. It's probably less than $10. But I still buy from him even though he is knowingly gouging shipping and more importantly in this case, circumventing ebay fees. I buy from him because his "total price" of $30.90 is still cheaper than anyone else on ebay (including the second cheapest guy selling the same item for $32 with FREE shipping. KWIM?

I am a powerseller on ebay and I do the same. Flat rate on all my listings.

I do make money on shipping on just about all of my items with the exception of maybe stuff shipped to the Southwest and Northwest. There are also some items I lose money on. I can't lower my fixed rate shipping costs because my shipping cost varies based on where the item is going to (how many zones away from NY they are). If I lower, then I will be losing more money to more people on the west coast.

It helps that I ship all my items UPS Ground so the buyer really has no idea what I am paying on shipping. And when I say I "make money" on shipping, that's only because of all the UPS corporate discounts and incentives I get. Luckily for me, the buyers have no idea what type of arrangements I have with UPS related to discounts. The UPS label also doesn't show what I paid and that helps even more. If you go by their retail rates listed on the website, the buyers think they are getting a fair deal.

The few items that I do ship USPS Priority (small flat rate $4.80 boxes), I charge actual shipping.

In the past 7 months I have sold over 500 items and I have NEVER had a buyer complain to me about shipping costs.

But yeah if you ship USPS and don't remove the postage amount from the label, it can be ugly.

Oh and speaking of USPS small flate rate boxes, if he shipped this in a small flat rate box or flat rate envelope for $4.80 or $4.95, he knew exactly what he would be charged regardless of destination because its a flate rate price with free envelopes. I would definitely go after him for that.

Re: Question about eBay Shipping Charge

for $20 shipping on a pair of tix (obviously a liteweight item) i would expect next day air. thats total bs and i would contact the seller about it first and try to resolve it with them.

i hate when sellers do that crap.

Re: Question about eBay Shipping Charge

Unfortunately, my DH, who made this purchase, did not know how much certified mail was. Is that "wrong" on his part, I'm sure some of you will be quick to tell me, sure - but again, I think he (we) have every right to question the seller who charged 5 times the amount of shipping and according to ebay's standards, there were virtually no handling charges.
To my knowledge, posting listed USPS - Certified Mail. It was mailed in a regular legal-sized white envelope, again, no special or additional packaging materials.
To those who keep saying you can include time, gas, money, etc in handling, according to ebay, you can't.
I only became aware of this yesterday when DH went to pick it up at post office, saw it was only 4.34 to mail and told me about it.

Seller was emailed last night. No response as of yet.

Re: Question about eBay Shipping Charge

honestly, how can you possibly complain about this if the $20 shipping charge was in the auction. This is what kills me. Ebay forces sellers to flat out say what the shipping cost is. If you find it excessive, than don't bid. Plain and simple. I would completely agree if you didn't know the fees.

I agree with the previous poster. Paying $95 for something with $5 S&H is the same to me as paying $80 with $20 S&H. Its the grand total.

As a seller, I charge a flat rate. I've made money and lost money. I've learned to NOT do local pick-up for items under $10. I make nothing that way. Its not cheap to list on ebay. I put a flat out cost.

In the beginning when I did do actual shipping, I lost money. When you deduct the ebay fees, supplies, paypal fees, etc, I lost money, so yes, I started inflating my shipping (not too excess) to cover some of my "handling" costs. Still at 100% and have never had anyone complain about shipping costs.

The debate is whether or not the seller is violating eBay's excessive shipping policy.

The policy can be a gray area if you are shipping with a carrier like UPS and FedEX where the actual shipping costs can not be seen by the buyer.

And as a seller and a buyer I can see both sides of the debate. But to charge $20 shipping to ship an envelope with a few stamps and certified, I think that's ridiculous and an obvious violation. USPS Express Mail which is guaranteed next day overnight doesn't even cost $20.
