Question about feeding a 6 week old...

DS is just over 6 weeks and he is now taking to getting fed every 2 hours. He use to be hungry every 3 hours. He currently eats 3.5 ounces per feeding and isn't always interested in more. But this morning he at 5 ounces. He is being fed formula & breast milk (pumped).

I was hoping the time between feedings would get longer - not shorter - particularly at night!

Any suggestions?

i am in the same boat... it is completely normal ds is almost 6 weeks and there are times he eats 5 ounces and sometimes 4 ounces but the frequency varies... most times it is 2.5 hours sometimes ever hour.... I also do formula an pumped breast milk... my ped said feed on demand and dont worry about a schedule... congrats on being 6 weeks

DS is 6 wks and he get's anywhere from 5 to 6 oz per feeding every 3 to 4 hrs- and sometimes 5 hrs- he was born 6 lbs 14.9 oz and at our last ped visit on his 1 month he was 8 lbs 14 oz. I think he is more than that now! He just always hungry. Ped says to give him if he takes it- but sometimes I'm like OMG too much! Gonna be a monster!

DD is going to be 6 weeks on Thursday, born 7 lbs 6 ounces, she was 8 lbs 12 ounces at her 2 week apt!!!! She has been EBF pumped milk... and usually eats 4-5 ounces and can go about 4 hours, usually 5-6 hours at night...

I am curious to see what she weighs now..

Wow! I thought DS was eating a bunch but then I see how much other dc's are eating around the same age. He doesn't seem to want more than 3.5 to 4 ounces. We've moved up from just under 2 ounces when we left the hospital. He was born almost a month early and weighed 6 lbs 3 oz but at his one month visit he weighed 8 lbs 4 oz.

Will he just keep moving up in volume? Do you think that will extend the time between feedings?

When Emerson was little even though she would increase the amount of formula she didn't really increase the time in between bottles until she was about 4 months old. At 3 months she had her last bottle at 10pm and would sleep through the night until 8-9am but it wasn't until around 4 months that she would go 4-5hrs. in between bottles during the day. It takes a while. Once she started solids (4 months) that helped to keep her satisfied longer between feedings. Chat Icon
