Question about reading to your dc
I always try to read to mikayla and it turns into a wrestling match, all she want to do is eat the book or rip the pages out and eat them
How do I read to her without it becoming a battle?

Read to her while she is in the high chair. That is what I have to do to get through a full book.

I read to Ella while we are rocking in her Glider. So far it's not a wrestling match.

Re: Question about reading to your dc
the wriggling is how it starts, eating the pages too.
They will learn to sit still as they get older.
Do you have touch and feel and scrinchy board books? In the beginning we never "read" we just felt, tasted and practiced turning pages while we pointed out things.

Re: Question about reading to your dc
Board books are easiest at this stage. Try giving DC one to hold as you read.
You aren't really readung so they get the plot, but modeling how to read, turn pages etc. If they see you love books, they will love them, too.

Re: Question about reading to your dc
I have to read only those board books so that the book doesn't get destroyed. And I hold it a little higher but he always manages to get his hands on them. So I try to show him how to turn the pages to help and I've decided not to get all worked up if we end up missing half the story anymore

Re: Question about reading to your dc
chewing them is all part of the learning process. choose simple books that you can abbreviate the story if need be.

Def is. Dh and I used to make up our own stories based on the pictures in the beginning, now that's she's 22 months old, she's starting to get what story goes with what book, we can't do it anymore.
I swear Puddle the Duck had at least 15 different story lines to keep Dh and I cracking up, since DD loved reading that boring book.

At that age, they don't understand "stories", so if you are forced to skip pages, they'll never know. I used to force the turning of the pages in the "right" order, but DC like to flip the pages themselves. I just read whatever page they turn to, and if they turn it mid-way, I just start reading whatever page they pick. That way, they are an integral part of the reading process. They are too young to pick up plot lines, suspense, character development, etc. They just need to hear your voice, and associate that the words you are saying relate to the book.

Re: Question about reading to your dc
I hold the book up out of his reach and he leans against my lap and looks up. I only read quick books like an Eric Carle book...
ETA - pre-literacy skills include mouthing and holding books as toddlers - so even exposing a child to a book and the pages is teaching them the important components of reading!

this is what we did. LOL as she got older, she was able to sit for longer periods of time. Now she is 21 mths and will sit for 4 or 5 books at a time.

Re: Question about reading to your dc
DC took a strong interest in books very young. We read at least 1 - 2 hours per day. We have dozens upon dozens of board books which are great! Very strudy! We didn't have problems with chewing or sitting still, we have a book worm on our hands

Re: Question about reading to your dc
If it's one of his favorite books he will sit still. He actually gets excited when I show him the book i'm going to read. He starts screaming in excitement! Again this is only if it's one of his favorite books...

OMG, ME TOO!!! Story time is torture for us. All Matthew does is grab them out of my hand, turn them over, flip them upside down, open the page, and hit himself in the face with it and gets mad. I do need to try some of these techniques. Most of the time I make up a story and just tell it to him.
