Question About Starting "Real" Foods
By real food I mean adult food that we're eating or that he's feeding himself. What foods did everyone start off giving? The problem I'm finding is with everything cut up SO small after a few "bites" he gets annoyed cuz he's hungry and won't eat any more of it. Maybe we're being too paranoid about the size and making things too small... How did everyone else get the real food thing started???

Re: Question About Starting "Real" Foods
we started as only a supplement to his baby food.... meaning i would give him his regular food and just cut up whatever we were eating as finger foods to play with... once he was better with the chewing i cut back on the baby food....

Re: Question About Starting "Real" Foods
are you letting him completely self-feed? I find that if I let DS completely self-feed it will take him an hour to finish and he will get bored or distracted so he barely eats anything.
I feed him bites in between him feeding himself or I will assist if I see he is struggling to get something in his mouth.

Re: Question About Starting "Real" Foods
No I still feed him but put some on the tray so he can explore or try to pick it up. I give him other food first too, but he either just isn't interested or maybe he's not ready... He seems to get upset after a few bites.

Re: Question About Starting "Real" Foods
yea... this happens to us too. Sometimes she is fine feeding herself, but either gets bored or frustrated. I try to have a few things on hand to switch off (in one meal) for example: Green beans, cheese, banana, puffs. I also try to help her along or have yogurt or apple sauce if she seems frustrated.

Re: Question About Starting "Real" Foods
Do you give him puffs?? If so, how does he do with them? And how many teeth does he have? DD has 7, so no issues chewing there....she eats anything and chews it to bits!
What about making him mashed potatoes or mashed sweet potatoes, or carrots. I found that DD will eat pureed "real" food, but no so much the baby food anymore. Another great thing is soup - you can kind of mash it with a fork that way it is chunky and he learns to chew, but it's soft enough that he won't choke.

He LOVES Puffs! I think that may be part of the problem. I've gotten into the habit of giving him Puffs when he first goes in the highchair while I get the food together and then he doesn't want anything else. He also just got tooth #5. The pureeing idea could work though the reason I've been hung-ho "real foods" is because our pediatrician said we should be doing more so DS gets used to different textures, etc.
