Question about those who successfully potty trained boys (POLL)
MIL is definate that DS is not yet potty trained because he is on the big potty, with a child seat. SHE KNOWS if he had his own kid size potty he would be out of diapers by now.
BTW: He is 26 months. Hardly TOO old for diapers.
So, can you take my poll please? TIA!!

Re: Question about those who successfully potty trained boys (POLL)
Our thoughts were.... the rest of the world has regular toilets. I haven't been to a restaurant bathroom yet that had plastic kiddie potties in them.... DC are going to HAVE to learn to use a full-size toilet (you can always bring a portable potty ring with you). You might as well teach them on the full-size one at home as well. Plus, less cleanup for you.
We had a potty for DS, but I think he really started catching on when we started using the regular toilet with a seat ring.

Re: Question about those who successfully potty trained boys (POLL)
We had a potty for him, but as PP said, I don't feel Brandon caught on till he used the regular seat with the ring...He barely used the little potty, it was a waste IMO for him ( but we had it from the daycare and it was less intimidating looking for the first few times so we kept it in the bathroom)
He ended up mailny using is as a step-stool to "stand up" to do his thing
Target sells these real toilet lids ( as do some other stores) that have the rings built into the seat...I would have liked one of these but they didnt have the right color...
Either way, eventually he will need a ring probably ( Brandon just recently stopped using the ring so he wouldnt have that faling in feeling and it gave him some independence), so its good that you have it anyway !

We had a little potty.. but to be honest.. they really saw it as more of a novelty than a training tool. The big potty was something that they KNEW the use for and seemed to be much more appealing for training purposes(especially for Noah).

This was our issue too. I use to put the little potty in the living room to make him more comfortable that way when he had to go it was right there (their is a bathroom either up or down stairs from the livingroom). Looking back it was a waste money!
I say stick to your guns and let him pick out a toilet cover. I wish I saw the ones at Target because the ones at BRU do not have handles and I could see how sometimes those handles come in handy especially in the beginning.

Kell, we're obviously not training Jack yet but w/ Gracie we had the mini Elmo toilet which she would sit on & press the button, but when she first started using the toilet, she said "big girl toilet" & we got her a Dora seat. She loves it & hasn't been on the Elmo one since. Also Kelly, its just another thing to have to clean

This is a great point. Tell anyone that it is much more sanitary to use an adult toilet with the insert. Both my kids used that. With DS we got one of those potty seats and he never used it.

Re: Question about those who successfully potty trained boys (POLL)
DS 21 mos went potty the first time the other day w/o anything. I have a ring for the regular toilet and he is afraid of it. He has been following me into the bathroom for about 1-2 months and gets excited when there is "water".
I'm not really ready to train him - a lot going on and I don't think he is ready either.
I went to BRU the other day and it was like the biggest decision of my life. I walked out w/out one.
When I was prego I thought the little potty was a waste b/c you have to clean it anyway. But if DS is afraid of the seat...
Plus, when he went, things weren't pointed where they needed to be so he got wet.
If you get the answer, let me know. I'm just sitting here &

Re: Question about those who successfully potty trained boys (POLL)
I successfully trained BOTH of my sons on a regular toilet, standing up to pee, at 29 months, and the 2nd was 30 months.
IMO, the "potty" is gross. Besides, then you are training them TWICE! Once on the "potty" and once on the toilet.

Re: Question about those who successfully potty trained boys (POLL)
My older son trained on a kiddie potty first (few weeks shy of 3yrs). He only used it for about 2 weeks or so and moved to the toilet with an insert and then maybe a month or so later started standing to pee. The transition was easy and no issues. I didn't feel like I was training him twice. The kiddie poty gave him comfort and once he had that he was fine going on the real toilet and it was only a couple weeks at most...peepee may have been less than 2 weeks to transition.
My youngest is almost 27 mos now and he is using the kiddie potty. He likes that he can get on it and off it himself easily. He goes and pees and I don't even know sometimes. I wasn't planning on training him until at leat 2.5 but if he has no diaper on - he goes to his potty and goes...I don't even have to remind him or anything. He likes to be independent. He has gone on the regular toilet with and without the insert but does have a preference to his potty. I know have to buckle down and push the training. I just have no desire...it's bad...afraid I am missing my opportunity...hopefully he'll train as easily as my older one did. But boy is it different in level of maturity..training a 3 yr old was much more easy to talk thru.

Re: Question about those who successfully potty trained boys (POLL)
My younger son trained on the potty seat. My older one on the regular toilet. I don't think it makes a difference, it's about when they are ready. And I agree 26 months is hardly too old for diapers.
