Potty Training Boys...BTDT moms..I have a question..( Long)

How do you know when they are really understanding what it means to go?

Basically where we stand is... suddenly Noah wants to sit on the toilet bowl ALL the time. And on his own small potty we bought him.

This came out of Nowhere, we never even talk about it or mention it....he just started saying "poo poo" or "pee pee" and running to one or the other and sitting there. We never even introcuded either to him.

Well so far nothing has happened ( he hasn't actually gone at all).

He will even sit there for quite some time. When I ask him if he has to go Poo poo or pee pee he says YES, but will either just touch himself or continue sitting there for a while.

I will then ask him " did you go poo poo or pee pee" and he will say YES but he hasn't.

Which leads me to think that he really doesn't "Get it" ...or understand what it is he is doing, ya know? I don't think he gets the concept yet of having control over going....

But I dont know what I should do.

While I dont feel he gets it at all and this is just a fun activity for him, I would hate to discourage it at the same time ( what if he IS ready??) ...

I'm not sure what to do?

What would you do? Continue explaining it to him or just try to ignore it and not let him do it for a while more till he gets older and understands?

The only reason I'm not really into playing along with it if he is not understanding/ready is because he wants to sit on it ALL THE TIME and it becoming a pain in the arse when he just sits there and I cannot get him to get up when we have to go somewhere, etc.

Thanks for reading...know it was a long one...

I think what you are describing is very natural curiousity and age appropriate and a great sign for your future. My son just turned 2 and has been doing that for awhile now. He has an older brother to copy and has an idea of what he is doing but I don't think he is ready. My dr actually told me at my last visit that he is ready (I didn't even tell him that) - she said by the way he acts she thinks he is ready and smart enough. I know I am not ready!!!

My older son did similar too. From at least 18 mos on, he'd pretend to us the potty and pretend he had to go but nothing came out til 2.5 and trained fully around 3. Often, he'd run to the bathroom after he'd do it in his diaper.

I think it is really up to you. You can push the issue or let it happen naturally. I am more for naturally since it went well with my oldest and closer to 3 they are so much more aware and have more understanding in general. Right now, with my 2 year old - I am letting him pretend, reading some potty books and talking to him about it. I am not pushing it but definitely talking about it/explaining more to him than I did with my oldest. Since he has a role model and he is interested - I figured it can't hurt. I don't mind diapers so I am not in a rush to train - I find diapers very easy. I would like to do it around 2.5 if I had my choice so he'll be trained for a bit before he starts nursery school next year/Spetmber. I know boys who have trained before 2 so it is very possible they can train early.

I agree with all of this! Its great that he is showing interest but I bet he wont be trained for a while. Both of my kids were trained about 3 months shy of their third birthdays. For my 1st, Jack, once I saw what I thought was readiness we started and it was very hard and frustrating because in fact he was not completley ready, so it took a good two weeks with accidents and all that stuff until he was trained. With Molly, who just trained about a month ago, I let it happen and she was trained in a day. I'm serious, 1 DAY! Chat Icon She was armed with everything she needed, the books, the cute underwear and I'd occassionally ask her if she wanted to use the potty. I usually got a stern "NO", so I let it go. Then one day she changed her mind, had one accident and we are potty trained.

So, my advice would be to ride it out. It will happen when he is ready and save yourself the stress and frustration. It will happen! Chat Icon

So I typed out above this morning and go figure my son did his 1st peepee this morning. My sons woke up same time and the eldest ran to go peepee so the little one followed. So I gave him his potty seat and we read a couple books and sure enough he pee'd. 1st time...probably a fluke but too funny after whatI wrote this morning. Still not pushing it but allowing him to move at his pace - if it continues - I'll push - if not I'll chalk it to a nice start. Boys are fighting - gotta go break it up....

Donna...
really dont worry. I rely on everyone telling me "when do you see a child go to college in diapers"....LOL
When it happens it will happen. I thought at 2 it was time bc of everyones time limits. The more she was able to talk and have a conversation with me, the easier it got. Granted she is 2.5 and wears pull ups, I can guarantee within the next few months it will be over and done. IMHO the communication is so important. It makes it so much easier.
