question about vaccines
Hi, I'm most onl the Pregnancy board but I had some questions for you moms. I'm 37 weeks and still deciding on a pediatrician.
Is it common practice to split up vaccines? Do most doctors offices do it or do most follow the CDC guidelines? Can the MMR be split?
thanks

Re: question about vaccines
It is not neccessarily common to split vaccines, but some people do. Some Doctors will only allow patients that follow the guidelines, meanning no splitting & no delaying. It is almost if not completely impossible to find a pediatrician that has the split version of the MMR (last time I checked) because of manufacturer availability.
Definitely make sure you are educated on both the pros and cons of vaccinating your child before making any decisions.

Gasp! my name! my name! There are TWO of us??!!!
Is it common practice to split up vaccines?
No, not in my experience
Do most doctors offices do it or do most follow the CDC guidelines? Yes, most follow the CDC guidelines
Can the MMR be split? Yes, but likely your insurance will not cover the cost, so be prepared for the the out of pocket costs if you opt for it.

Re: question about vaccines
I thought the MMR could no longer be split due to a shortage of one of the single shots. I could be wrong though. It is something I would definitely bring up sooner rather than later though.

Yes, the MMR is no longer manufactured separately. In fact, the single shots r unavailable to the point where kids who started singles now have to get the MMR just to get "the rest".
My ped routinely gives a max of 2 shots per visit except obviously the MMR is 3 but there's nothing that can be done.
I do not believe in the mercury/vaccine-autism link but think there might be something to the argument that it could be negative to overwhelm a child's body with the production of too many anti-bodies at once. Anyway, my ped spaces them out a bit but nothing is skipped and ds will only be "exposed" to certain things for a few weeks extra max.

Re: question about vaccines
Thanks ladies. I work in special education so I'm pretty familiar with all the studies about vaccines and autism...that wasn't my big concern. It was more what was previously said about overwhelming a new baby to all of these shots. So far from my research it seems like most doctors follow the guidelines. I was hoping maybe i'd be able to find some doctors who didn't.
Thanks for the information and advice

Re: question about vaccines
Hi
Is it common practice to split up vaccines? I am aloud to space out my vaccines ~ I do hear that other Peds are not allowing it they want you to follow the guidelines.
Do most doctors offices do it or do most follow the CDC guidelines? My Ped recommends the vaccine schedule but I have altered it to what I feel comfortable giving my son.
Can the MMR be split? My Ped said the MMR is no longer available to be split. Not sure if any other Ped can split ~ I was under the impression out of the measles, mumps, rubella, if you split it up one of the shots were not available in the split version ~ there were only 2 parts out the 3 available
Good Luck!

Re: question about vaccines
Is it common practice to split up vaccines? Common? No, but it can be done
Do most doctors offices do it or do most follow the CDC guidelines? Most doctors will follow their OWN Guidelines and call it CDC when its really an interpretation of the CDC. If you notice the CDC has ranges for a lot of the later shots say 12-18mo and I have been successful in 'delaying' her shots by saying that *I* am following CDC by getting some shots in the beginning of the range and some in the end.
Can the MMR be split? It *can* be but its nearly impossible to find. This shot I gave all by itself with no others since it has 3 meds.

Thanks for the information and advice My Doctor allows me to delay the schedule for medical (not autism) reasons. If you are in Nassau I can give you his name. FM me for info.

Re: question about vaccines
My ped. has respected every decision I've made about vaccinating my child. I think its crucial to find someone to care for your child who will listen to your concerns and not impose their views on you. It's very hard to find a doctor like that these days. If you feel you have to split/ delay some vaccines you should be able to do so without them making it incredibly difficult for you. I hope you can find someone that will accept your decisions whatever they may be! Good luck!

Re: question about vaccines
There are some online sites where you can purchase the vaccines split up.
