question about weaning baby off the boob

I am starting to "try" to wean Luca off the boob. I started with giving him his bedtime bottle as formula (for about 4 weeks) and now he's getting a formula bottle during the day too. I've also elliminated pumping. But I'm finding that at about 3am my boobs are so engorged and painful that they wake me up, and I actually count the minutes for him to wake up for a feeding. When is my body going to get the message? Is there something different I can do?
Here's Luca's feeding schedule. Any suggestions are welcome.
7am- gets the boob
10am gets the boob
1pm gets the boob
4pm gets formula
6:30pm gets formula
4am gets the boob

Hmmm, maybe one of those early day feedings needs to be replaced with formula, as well. Remember it's demand and supply. So the more you switch to formula, the less your body will produce.

What I did, and would do, wean yourself slowly by taking one am feeding, then 1 afternoon feeding, so your not eliminating 2 feedings in a row. Only elimate another feeding when you do not feel engorged or in pain for at least 1-2 days.

So for the 1st week you would

7am Boob
10am Formula
1 pm Boob
4pm Formula
6:30 Boob
4am formula

Then as your body adjusts, eliminate one more feeding at a time. I left the 1st in the am feeding and last feeding of the night for last.

I had an oversupply, so i was always engorged and in pain while Bf'ing. I would only take away 1 feeding and do it for at least 3-5 days before i eliminated another one.

It took me about a month to fully wean her, but i was in minimal pain and rarely engorged.

So your next wearning feeding would go

7am boob
10am formula
1pm formula
4pm formula
6:30pm boob
4am formula

And so on...

I can definitley have his 10am and 4pm be formula, but I can't really give him the boob at 6:30 because I'm at work. And then I wind up having to give him the boob at 4am because I'm engorged by then. Chat Icon

I would hand express a tiny tiny bit of milk, just to relieve the engorgement so you aren't in much pain for the night, maybe go back to giving him the 4am feeding, so it won't be such a cold turkey thing for your body.

Then start the process again.

The goal is to have your supply decrease as much as possible while having you as comfy as possible as they dry up.

BF'ing is def supply and demand, the more that comes out, the more your body will make to replace it. You want to stop that cycle.

Good luck!

Re: question about weaning baby off the boob

Is at night the only time you are engorged/pain? Is it every single night or does it seem to be letting up?

The first day i would cut a feeding, i would be engorged, but then the next day, it would be better, than the next day, even better...

Yes, it's only at night. I'm fine to skip a feeding or even two during the day (he's gotten bottles of BM). But skipping those feedings and then the hours he's sleeping are a bit much. It does seem to be letting up a little though.

I would keep at it THEN and don't go in reverse. If you need too, def hand express a tiny bit to relieve yourself, but the engorgement will def get the idea.
Just keep an eye on yourself for plugged ducts.
