Question for Catholic Church Goers

We recently joined a new parish and we just got the collection envelopes.

How much do you give each week?

According to the guidelines they give per your income, we "should" be giving over $50 a week!! Chat Icon

Just curious what everyone else gives.

That seems like a lot! I think we give about $20.

I used to give $10, when I went ( I was single.) That particular parish seemed to be all about the money, which annoyed me.

I think $20-25 is fine; I also donate to all the "second collections" they have at certain masses, and the Bishop's Appeal.

Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers

We give about $10-$15. I would like to give more, I'm a teacher and only subbing right now so my income is not very steady.

We give each week what we can. it's better to use the envelopes because that way the parish sees that you are a registered parishoner...that comes in handy when it's time to receive any of the Sacraments, enrolling kids in school or after-school activities, religious ed. etc. they can also track your donations when you use the envelopes which us good beacsue that money is tax deductible (they can print you out a statement).

i also like to give money to the second collection.. which goes to charities such as missions abroad, etc. etc.

The "all about the money" church I used to go to never did a 2nd collection. I thought that was odd. Another reason I didn't like it there. . .

Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers

I could be wrong but I believe the church encourages a 10% tithe. But that includes all other charities that you may be giving to, as well. So, we contribute about 5% of our weekly earnings to the church and the other 5% goes towards the charities that we contribute to throughout the year.

I think the church says you should donate to them about 10 (or is it 20?)% of your income Chat Icon
I follow the "give what you can" train of thought

Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers

I give what we can afford, which can vary week to week if something comes up in the house or with the car. I give in the envelopes so they have me as a registered, active parishoner.

We also have the appeals and special collections and my church is starting a capital campaign for a major renovation.

Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers

I'll give 5.

I also give to their drives. I feel much better dropping off food, baby stuff, and coats then I do giving money.

I should give more, it will all come back to me. My sister is a nun and her nieces and nephews get half off tuition to the Catholic College her order is affiliated with. We also have access to the vacation home.

Don't flame...

I was baptized made my 1st communion confirmation and was married in the church... BUT I feel it's so wrong that they tell you how much you should give as a donation

The % is just a suggestion, you are supposed to give what you can.
To me - although the Church is not perfect, the Catholic Church as an organization does more good throughout the world than any other single organization. So whatever I can give is worth it.

BTW, before I get flamed - I know that it is also the wealthiest organization...I'm aware of the fact. I just feel that if some of my money does some good it's worth it.

Chat Icon Remember when you would give $1.00 at chruch that your parents gave you. I can't believe how much some people give now and what they recommend you give.

Honestly, DH and I don't go every weekend, but when we do we give $5-$10. And the two collection thing still bothers me. Now instead of giving $10 at the one collection during mass, I give $5 at each one. Makes no sense to me...I'll give you what i plan on giving you at one time.

Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers

I think that it is wrong for them to tell you how much to give and my mother a highly relgious woman taught me that! Who are they to tell you what amount to give?? You give what you can.

Now my grandmother on the other hand will look at what she is supposed to give and give more...but she is from a different time!

Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers

They dont tell you what to give, its not like they look at your bank acct and say ok stacey and john you make $$$ so your donation is going to have to be $$$. You give what you think is best, I'm pretty sure they are happy to get anything.
