Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers
We actually got a form letter from the church telling us how much we were giving last year and asked us to increase it by a suggested amount. The priest also just went house to house and in the letter before he came they asked for a block collection and suggested a minimum $150 per family (I guess they figure you can't say no to the priest in your own home).
I do get annoyed sometimes when they are so much about $ , especially since I know the Catholic Church is a wealthy organization, but I do agree that in general they do good things with that money. I also think if they could get more people to volunteer their time they wouldn't have to ask for as much money, but for busy people today it's just easier to give money than to give themselves.

$40 for our regular weekly envelope
ETA: for those that think they shouldn't give b/c the Catholic organization is so wealthy, that really has nothing to do with your Parish. A Parish is run by the parishoners. When too many parishoners start to think it is someone elses job to pay the bills, churches close. God has given us so much, me and DH are more than willing to help our Parish stay open so they can continue to spread the word and do good things in the community, that is our take on it.
I totally agree

Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers
We give $10-$20 each week depending on what we can give - but more for holidays.
It's a good idea to use the envelopes because most parishes will provide you with a form at the end of the year with your total contributions - you can use that for tax purposes.

Re: Question for Catholic Church Goers
I give what I can afford at any given time... I don't use the envelopes because I don't really like the idea of giving money for "credit"

Don't flame...
I was baptized made my 1st communion confirmation and was married in the church... BUT I feel it's so wrong that they tell you how much you should give as a donation
I am right there with you. Born and raised catholic; baptized, communion, confirmation, married, we just baptized our daughter.... I went to catholic schools ALL my life. My parents are SERIOUS catholics and play a huge role in our church. However... as an "institution"... I don't like how they are always asking you for money.

Not flaming either of you.... However, I don't understand why the Catholic Church always get a bad rap regarding donations. . . . talk to any evangelical Christian and they give FAR more (generally) than most Catholics... most of those churches ask people to donate a third of their income..... and quite frankly, many other churches don't even come close to the work that the Catholic Church does...
many people dont' know this, but the Catholic Church is only second behind individual governments in providing social services in the WORLD. in the United States, it is the Catholic Church that picks up a large percentage of the social services that our government fails to provide many citizens. think of all the Catholic run schools, hospitals, homeless shelters, child care centers, etc. etc. not to mention all of the work that is done all over the WORLD for the poor. not many other religious organizations are all over Africa, Asia,, Latin America, etc. providing health care, relief from natural disasters, education, clean water, hospitals, etc. etc. This is where the vast majority of the money goes.
on Long Island, most of our Catholic Churches are parishes, meaning they are run by the PEOPLE. the people must help run it and provide the good works that are expected from us as Christians to serve our communities.
also, it's all over the bible about tithing... so for many it is Biblically based (and since many take the Bible as the Word of God) it is God asking us to give. the Catholic Church does NOT mandate a donation...they merely suggest what would be appropriate based on what you earn....
