Question for English Teachers or Grammar Lovers
I am creating a calendar on Snapfish. If a name ends with an "s", like Alexis, how do i write their birthday on the calendar?
Alexis's Birthday or Alexis' Birthday
TIA!! (I am a Math Teacher...i know nothing about words )

Re: Question for English Teachers or Grammar Lovers
Alexis's birthday.
I *believe* you only leave off the s after the apostrophe if the word before it is plural and ends in "s".

Re: Question for English Teachers or Grammar Lovers
Found this on a website:
Singular possessive The possessive form of a singular noun is an apostrophe followed by the letter "s."
Kramer's hair Daphne's patience the car's engine
Words ending with s, z or x generally omit the "s."
Dr. Seuss' sense of humor
So i guess it's Alexis' Birthday

To "clarify" things, I found this website:
http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/apostro.asp
Use the apostrophe to show possession. Place the apostrophe before the s to show singular possession. Examples one boy's hat one woman's hat one actress's hat one child's hat Ms. Chang's house Mr. Jones's golf clubs Texas's weather Ms. Straus's daughter Jose Sanchez's artwork Dr. Hastings's appointment (name is Hastings) Mrs. Lees's books (name is Lees)
Even names ending in "s" get an ' and another s.
Hope that clears things up...

Re: Question for English Teachers or Grammar Lovers
It is Alexis' birthday.
Nowadays...because they can't leave well enough alone, Alexis's is also acceptable. Personally, I hate it that way because I hate all the 'new' grammar rules, but you're not asking for my opinion.
If you want to be old-school proper, you'd put Alexis'.

Re: Question for English Teachers or Grammar Lovers
I always come out of lurker mode for English teacher questions, I guess...
It would be Alexis's birthday... the only names that end in "s" for which you would NOT add another "s" after the apostrophe are Moses and Jesus. (So it would be Moses' birthday, not Moses's birthday.) This is from my DH, who works in publishing. It's a style thing, though. It wouldn't necessarily be WRONG if you didn't add the second "s" after the apostrophe. (I hope I explained that clearly enough...)

Nope.
It's Alexis's Birthday.
Unless she's Jesus or Moses, there should be an apostrophe and an s. If she IS Jesus or Moses, it's Jesus' Birthday.

Actually, Aexis' would never have been proper. The incorrect version may have been widespread and accepted -- but it was never proper English. Only biblical names are written that way.

What web site did you find that on? Proper names ALWAYS get an s after the apostrophe. The Dr. Suess' example is totally incorrect.

I googled "grammar - pluralizing" and this was on one of the websites that came up.

Alexis's birthday.
I think that is the old school rule. British English teaches that and they don't really change their English.
