Question for Moms who still BF DC when starting solids....

How many times per day were you breastfeeding DC after solids were started? Did it go down from before solids? Did the length of time of feedings go down? TIA!

Re: Question for Moms who still BF DC when starting solids....

Until 1 year, their primary source of nutrition should still be BM or formula, so I didn't cut out any of the feedings. At this age, the feeding of solids is JUST to get them used to chewing and swallowing thicker consistencies.

I would usually nurse her before feeding her solids. Slowly, as she increased her need for more food, she would just choose to nurse for less and less time, and would consume more solids.

Actually I was told something a little different. Yes, the primary source of nutrition is bfing, but they also begin to get some of their important nutrients from solid foods after about 6 months. Particularly, cereal that is fortified with iron is necessary since breast milk does not provide enough iron after a certain age. If your child does not eat enough cereal, you may be prescribed iron supplements. My dd was on iron supps for a while because she was not a big fan of cereal and did not take formula.

So, although for quite a while I did not cut back, now at 9 months she is only nursed 3-4 times per day. I am really trying for just 3 cause I don't think she eats enough solids otherwise.

I nursed the same maybe a feeding less once I started solids. By 8 months she was down to 3-4 feedings a day and 3 meals a day. I cut it back to 2 nursing sessions a day at 10.5 months and I just stopped nursing at 11 months. She is on soy milk now with no problems. She is great eater, if she wasn't then I probably would have stuck with 3 times a day.

I did this schedule for DS too who was FF.
