Question for OOS People Regarding Sept 11th
Last year was my first year that I did not live in NY on Sept 11th and it made me miss NY even more. I don't know, I don't know if it's that I feel (right or wrong) that it's not as acknowledged in other places or that I feel like I'm surrounded by people who weren't affected the same way we all were (although I don't know if that's true.) Granted, I still shudder everytime I see 9:11 on the clock.
Anyone else feel the same way - really miss NY esp on Sept 11th? Just feel very alone on this day not being in NY.

Re: Question for OOS People Regarding Sept 11th
I totally understand how you feel. I was living in VA going to college when 9/11 happened and although people were saddened, I know that I felt this on a deeper level than them. I was waitressing at a restaurant working my way through school on this day and people still were coming in like it was no big deal!!
Not only was my sense of security broken on a national level, the place I always will consider home suddenly felt unsafe and scary. People in other cities will never understand the frantic phone calls home and level of fear felt by NYers and the people of DC.
Some in other states (in my experience) feel pretty much like we mainly mourn the loss of the building but it's sooo much more than that. I used to see that building from my in Queens every morning before heading to high school and it's absence is a constant reminder to all who live in NY of all that was lost.

my sister lives in CA and I remember that on 9/11, she desperately wanted to be here with her family.

Re: Question for OOS People Regarding Sept 11th
yeah i have always felt that it was just a little different for us new yorkers vs. other people. i don't know if that is true -- but in my heart, i was so affected by 9/11 b/c this is my HOME that i see where you are coming from and what you mean.
that being said, i am an even prouder new yorker since 9/11 than ever before.

Re: Question for OOS People Regarding Sept 11th
This is my first year not being in NY for 9/11. I know exactly how you feel. I wish I could be home and go to the memorials in NY tomorrow and not here in NC.
I think a lot of ppl from other states have a hard time realizing how different the experience was for us NYers than it was for the rest of the country. More than 60% of our hs had family/friends working or living in the city on 9/11. And after 9/11, tons of police officers and firefighters from our area worked on the scene for months and months. Its something that will always effect us...

Re: Question for OOS People Regarding Sept 11th
Im not in NYC this year for the first time since 9/11. On that date I was only blocks away from the attacks, I feel a little lonely all the way out here in ATL where people just can't relate to how I feel.

glad I'm not the only one - it is truly a feeling of loneliness and a longing to be in NY.

I feel your pain. I had a friend invite me to a playdate tomorrow for our kids in the morning. I can't attend because I will be at a small memorial on base. She was totally confused by my choice. I miss 9-10-01 when Dh being in the military was alot easier.

This is my 3rd year not being in NY on 9/11 and I really do miss NY more than ever...I remember last year, crying so hard...for the families and the tragedy that they went through and even for myself...the memory of that awful day will stay with me forever...

Re: Question for OOS People Regarding Sept 11th
I haven't been in NY on 9/11 since that actual day. It's different here in DC b/c of the Pentagon; people observe and think back to what they were doing that day and attend memorials like they do in NY. I drive right past it to and from work every day and tonight on the way home, the side where the plane hit was lit up in preparation for the Memorial dedication ceremony tomorrow.
But, you are right. People from other parts of the country that were not affected (i.e., not the tri-state area, PA, or VA/MD/DC) don't feel quite the same as those of us from those areas.

I feel the same way. I haven't live in NY since 2005 and will always miss it especially around 9/11 because it brings back memories of where i was that day it happened.
