question for parents - do you need a tub?

we are looking at a property and thinking of redoing the bathroom so its a large stand up shower. if/when we have LOs, is having a tub really necessary? when they are young they are in those little tubs anyway, which we could put in the shower, right? and when they are older, can't they learn to shower?

thoughts? im clueless!

I think you should keep a tub... it will affect resale if you don't have any tubs in your house.

we'd still have 1, since the property has 2 baths. but more likely then not, we would be using the one with the shower on a daily basis.

just wondering (aside from resale) how necessary a tub is for kids...

TIA!!!

Showering a 1 year old is pretty difficult. You need a tub IMO.

You definitely need at least one tub in a house with small children.

I don't think you need a tub for kids. I used a baby/child tub for DS until he was around 2 and he was 90th+ percentile for height and weight. The Eurobath tub is huge. After that DS was fine with showering. He's 3 now and usually takes a shower. We have a tub but I'd rather give him a shower.

a tub is definitely necessary with kids!!! My dd is 3 1/2 and still takes baths. Those little tubs - they out grow by the time they can sit up so about 7 months old.

i think a tub is def. a plus and would be a pain in the ass bathing a kid without it but DD is 26 months and she still use the baby tub Chat Icon Chat Icon

As a mom - yes, you need a tub. My son is 4 and has only recently started taking showers. There's quite a gap of time between bathing them in a small plastic tub on the counter when they are newborns and when they are ready to shower.

As a realtor - yes, you should have a tub. Most of my buyers want at least one tub in the house (for kids, pets, themselves). And although we call bathrooms with just shower stalls "full baths" on LI, it's technically only a 3/4 bath. So for resale value, having at least one bath with a tub is much preferred.

ETA - If you have 2 baths, and one would still have a tub, then you don't need 2. As long as you have one in the house, that is fine from a resale perspective.

Re: question for parents - do you need a tub?

I think it's really important to have a tub.

DH and I do not have children, and we wouldn't have looked at a house lacking a tub on the floor with our bedroom. We both only take showers, but we are going to sell this house in a couple of years, and I know a lack of a tub would have a huge impact on resale value.

Also...when I used to babysit, the kids hated the shower until they were like 7 or so. They would always take baths, and they loved to play in the tub!

Another point: If you are trying to bath more than one LO at a time, I imagine a shower would be really, really difficult!

Yes, you need a tub for children.

I think it would be a problem for resale - for me, I'd have to redo that bathroom.

Just one in the house is fine.

Re: question for parents - do you need a tub?

Kids only use the baby tub for like 8 months and then most just go in the regular tub. You need a tub. They like to splash, have fun, play w/ toys. My 2.5yo twins have taken showers but mostly just take baths.

A tub is necessary for young kids.

question for parents - do you need a tub?

My daughter LOVES to play in the tub. A house without a tub would be a pass for me, unless i planned on redoing the bathroom as soon as I moved in. She can take a shower, but she has fun in there so why deprive her of that.

this exactly...my 4 yr old also just started taking showers...but still prefers the tub...and since they are out of the baby tub when they start sitting up between 6-9 months..that is at least 3.5 yrs where you need a tub!

Re: question for parents - do you need a tub?

I'm adding to the need a tub crew. We had to install one because our house only had stand up showers in it. Our 1st floor bath had a small footed tub I use for the baby. My son who is 4 now uses the upstairs bathroom with the shower but there is no way I could shower an 18 month old or fit her in the sink and we have a HUGE sink!
