Question for those of you who get EI Services?
How long are your appointments?
Also if you have questions or concerns are you allowed to ask before or after the appointment or do they cut the time with DC short because of it?

Re: Question for those of you who get EI Services?
By appointments, do you mean the therapies themselves?
The length of the therapies depends on the therapies themselves. Some are 45 minutes with some agencies, some are 1 hour (feeding, speech, OT, PT, etc..). ABA sessions for DS are 90 minutes.
I ask my questions as we go into the sessions. Sometimes in the end, when they write their notes. I try not to extend their time past the time allowes. Most therapists have back to back cases/kids so they need to travel to another house and be there on time.

Re: Question for those of you who get EI Services?
The actual therapy. My sister has been having a nightmare of a time since day one getting my nephew speech therapy. They had the 1st therapy today and she was told if she wanted to talk about anything they would have to subtract the time for the session. I didn't think that sounded right but I guess the way Sophie said it it actually makes sense.

Our therapists don't really "stop" to answer my questions. It's more about the "right timing" to ask questions. And they answer at the right timing too.. ie. I don't ask them a question when they are working on a specific joint attention task.
I have heard of 30 minutes but that REALLY short. Ours are 45 minutes for speech/feedind and OT. When our speech therapist comes for 45 minutes, time flies by.

She was told if she had any questions or concerns she could ask at the beginning and start the actual services late or end the services early to talk at the end. I totally understand what your saying about needing to get to other appointments on time...it is only fair to the next family. I guess it's just bothering her and myself because of all of the other crap she's been dealing with. As it is they are already cutting the actual number of sessions short due to a mistake on their part.

Re: Question for those of you who get EI Services?
We get 2 1 hour sessions a week....though our speech therapist kinda cute them to 45 min's but to be honest I feel thats better for Noah anyway so I allow it. She NEVER rushes me if I have questions or concerns and she tells me to email or call her anyway. We usually go over things the last 5 min's of the session.

Yikes, that just sounds rude. I would be mad if my sons time was taken away from due to concerns I had. I would actually complain about that and if the therapist is that booked she doesnt have a few minutes, I would request a different one. That wouldnt fly with me at all. Is she on LI? What agency does she use? ( maybe you can find out)

I know she went through Longwood School...i'll find out which one exactly.
When she first called he had his evaluation and they said he qualified. She was told that once they found a therapist that was available they would call her with dates and times. She never received a call and called them back. She spoke to someone who was very rude and said she was supposed to call them with a name of a therapist she chose from the list they sent her. She was never told of or received a list. They said she was supposed to have called them with the name 2 weeks before and my nephew would now lose out on 2 weeks of sessions. She is so unhappy with the whole process so far but is not sure what is "normal"

How old is he?
Ei is birth to 3 and Cpse is 3-5, Cpse is usually through the School Dist and Ei through the county. I think the EI usually does 45 min sessions twice a week and most School Districts do 30 min sessions, 2,3,4 or 5 times a week.

Re: Question for those of you who get EI Services?
The time of the session is whatever the IFSP mandates. That was determined at the IFSP meeting. As for the questions, unless there is a reason, the parent should be in on the therapy session with the child because it is a family centered approach. During the session, the therapist should be explaining what she is doing and give the parent suggestions to follow up when the therapist is not there. The therapist is only there for a few hours or so but the parent is there 24/7. However, questions should be asked in the time allotted. I have had parents who have kept me on a regular basis 30 minutes passed my time, which makes me either late for my next session or have to cancel. If its once in a while, I don't see it as a big deal, but when it becomes a regular thing I do tell parents that I have to keep the sessions to the allotted time. However, if the parent is in the room for the therapy sessions, this tends to eliminate the issues of going over. HTH!
ETA: If he went through Longwood school district, it is probably CPSE not EI. And then the time would be whatever is on the IEP and was determined at their meeting.

I must be wrong by saying EI...It must be CPSE since he just turned 5 and will be going to Kindergarten next school year.
I guess 30 minutes is normal then...and I do totally get why the sessions can't run over in time.
Thanks...i'll definitely pass that info on to my sister.
One more question. When the therapist came she said she was suprised my nephew qualified because they have been cutting back on services and she doesn't feel he needs it. Do you think she could just be saying he doesn't need it because they are short staffed or something like that?

No, if he doesn't needed in their opinion then most likely he doesn't. However, if you feel that he needs help, you can def argue that, and I also believe they can revaluate after 6 months? I give you an example. My son has torticollis as far the testing went, he passed everything BUT I was very clear that if he wasn't going to get PT through EI I had a Pediatric PT lined up, so either way my son was going to get the help I felt he deserved. I lucked out by having the evaluation by the owner of the agency so she was able to work around it and service my child. Another example. A friend of mine knew her 1 yr had problems due to ADHD already in the family. She had EI come in and he did well so did not qualified, she tried again 6 months later and the same thing...he did not qualified for the services. A few months later, this child was out of control, he was kicked out of a couple of day cares etc. He is now 3 yrs old with ADHD among other issues and on medication. With that said, defitnetly be persistent and seek help. Best of luck!

She wouldn't say that because they are short staffed. She may very well be "surprised" he qualified, but the point is, he did and she should provide services until she deems it is no longer necessary. If she doesn't feel he needs services, she needs to test him again and justify why she is discontinuing services. It sounds as if she just started though, and you have to see the child atleast 30 days to make such a recommendation. However, if he is 5 and going to kindergarten next year, he will be getting reevaluated next year by the district for CSE services. At that time, they might not feel he qualifies and will not get services. She is right that they are cutting back but this is due to budget reasons from the state, not because of agencies short staffed. If an agency is short staffed, and not able to provide services, it is the districts responsibility to find a suitable alternative.
ETA: I wanted to clarify the acronyms I used. EI is early intervention that is run by the state and deals with students from birth to age 3. CPSE is the committee on preschool special education and deals with students in preschool from ages 3 -5. This is run by the school district. CSE is the committee on special education and deals with students from ages 5-21. This is also run by the school district. HTH!

Yeah...I didn't realize it wasn't EI.
Honestly i'm not sure if he really needs it or not although my mom has mentioned before that she thought he needed to be checked. My sister asked his teacher to keep an eye out for a different learning problem(which turned ouyt to be nothing) and his teacher recommended he be evaluated for his speech. he obviously qualified but the woman who came said she didn't think he needed it. He has some minor issues with certain sounds and letters but is totally understandable.

Re: Question for those of you who get EI Services?
i'm a speech therapist- i work in a school now, and did one of my internships in EI. I work in NJ, so it might be different.. but here once the child turns 3, ,if they still need services, they go to a preschool program through the school district. These are usually 1/2 day programs, and the services are usually given 30 minutes at a time. Depending on the child's needs, they might get 1, 2, or 3 30 minute sessions a week. The parent usually is not at the session, because its set up similar to a school setting. The therapist should have some sort of communication notebook set up so that they can write notes about what they did with the child, and maybe give the parent some ideas to reinforce at home. (I don't have any of the preschool kids this year, but last year I had a couple, and I always made sure to write a note at the end)
BUT when i did EI, the sessions were an hour. We usually did about 45-50 minutes of actual therapy, and stopped a few minutes early to write notes and to answer the parents questions. The parent was usually there the whole time, so we would also give input/suggestions during the session, too.

Re: Question for those of you who get EI Services?
When we first started therapy I had a lot of questions. Usually they would give feedback during the session, as they were working with him they would explain. Sometimes it went over the session, most of the time it didn't.
They both gave me their phone, if I had any other questions or concerns I could call. In the very beginning Lance's teacher called me and we spent over an hour on the phone talking about her impression of him and his abilities... That was on her own time.
I have to say we were blessed with really great therapists.
