Question for those of you who pay a nanny/babysitter...

Hope it's ok to post here. I have a friend who is due in November with her first. We just got off the phone, and she was asking me about hourly/rates of what she should be paying someone to take care of her infant. Seeing as that I have no kids, I'm not much help with this... Chat Icon Chat Icon

She would be dropping her child off @ 7am and her husband would pick them up at 5pm. However her husband is a cop, so his schedule is x days on then 2 days off... then x days on then 3 days off... which sometimes fall on a weekend. He also coaches sports and sometimes has games after school- in which case sometimes the child would have to stay an extra hour until my friend could pick them up.

Sorry, it's getting long... any idea, give or take what to me seems like a 50 hour work week (not taking into account some weeks her husband will be home 2-3 days, which I have no clue how they'll work out) what an hourly rate and/or weekly rate is to have someone care for your child? She lives in the Bellport/Patchogue area. TIA! Chat Icon

She would probably be best with a nanny who comes to her since her schedule is so flexible. When I had a nanny (essentially worked 7am - 6pm 5 days a week), I paid $400 a week. I live in NJ. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I pay $80 a day for my babysitter; drop off 7 am, pick up anytime from 330-430 depending on day. All meals, milk included.

Re: Question for those of you who pay a nanny/babysitter...

For our babysitter, who is just a few times per month it is $10 per hour. Our schedules are so screwy too, so some days in the week we didn't need anybody. We found a babysitter to work for our needs, rather than a full-time nanny.

This is my exact situation, and finding a babysitter is a disaster, bc the days change weekly. Tutortime and those bigger places want set days per week, but since my DH is home alot during the week, I wanted a babysitter to come to my house.

Long story short, I posted what I wanted on sittercity and we found someone who will come to my house in September when I return to work and who was flexible with the alternating schedule.

She can also contact the Suffolk Child Care council if she is willing to drop off at someone's house who is flexible.

It sounds like $15/hour is the going rate these days.

Thanks everyone! Chat Icon I'll be sure to pass the info over to her. I know she was stressing about it, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask here. I figured someone would know! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Question for those of you who pay a nanny/babysitter...

From what you described, I'd expect to pay $60-75 per day.

If the sitter was coming directly to their home and watching only their child, you'd expect to pay $10-15 per hour.

I pay my sitter $100 per day. She gets to my house between 8:45-9:15 and leaves around 6:15. She does light cleaning and all the laundry as well. HTH.

Thanks everyone! I know she's meeting w/ a friend of her DH's who has offered to take care of the baby after her maternity leave. She's going to see what the woman asks for, but I have a feeling what she's expecting to pay is lower than what this woman will be thinking. Chat Icon
I'll pass all the info on to her. I know my DB's kid's nanny is getting a new job this summer b/c they're moving out here and she doesn't drive and she told me she'll be getting $850 a week to take care of 1 month old twin girls..that's in Queens. Thanks again! Chat Icon
