Question for those of you who've had an epidural
How strange is it to not be able to feel your lower half?????
I just read what ambersmom wrote about it freaking her out on another thread and I really feel like I might feel the same. Ijust hope I don't freak out too much (I'm a big whimp) I know in the end I would probably rather NOT feel anything than feel the pain but how strange is it really and do you really think about it or are you just happy to get some relief?
TIA

Re: Question for those of you who've had an epidural
It is a weird feeling - kind of like when you get novicaine at the dentist just on your legs/lower half. It is strange...but honestly I didn't think too much of it. The relief from the pain was great and I was able to get some rest before I had to push.

Re: Question for those of you who've had an epidural
I can't speak from experience b/c Ava apparently took the eviction notice I put on my belly very seriously I didn't get an epi b/c there wasn't time.
However, with this little guy I'm hoping for another fast labor but I would like an epi this time. From what I understand the epi also makes you not feel the contractions as much as without and you're more comfortable therefore more relaxed.
Not to scare you but the contractions were by far the worst pain I have ever experienced. They hurt more than actually pushing the baby out.

Re: Question for those of you who've had an epidural
Well, I didn't have an epideral, but I had a spinal because I had a c-section. I couldn't feel from my boobs down. It was weird, but I didn't care too much about it because I didn't want to move because I just had major surgery. I've never had surgery so it was a big deal. I guess you don't think of too much of it with a c-section because you're too worried about so many other things, that's the easy part!
I do have to say though that it made me shake really bad, and I felt really cold. I couldn't hold my son for a couple of hours after because I didn't trust myself with the shaking.

My SIL got a spinal for a c-section and kindof freaked out b/c she couldn't feel herself breathing.........she kept saying I'm not breathing, I'm not breathing ....luckily she calmed down so my brother was able tobe in the room.

I feel the SAME way... I think I'm more scared of the epidural and not having control or feeling in my body than anything else (other than the IV )

Re: Question for those of you who've had an epidural
I had an epidural and it didn't slow down the process. I ended up having a c-section in the end. Also, I was able to feel my legs and everthing else. The only thing I dind't feel were the contractions. I guess I was lucky.

Re: Question for those of you who've had an epidural
I honestly didn't think about it, I just wanted the pain to go away. it was a smooth ride from there, didn't feel a thing and I was able to rest. My little girl was a trooper and she helped me out so much. the nurses said that my labor and delivery was almost perfect.

I feel the SAME way... I think I'm more scared of the epidural and not having control or feeling in my body than anything else (other than the IV )
My biggest phobia in the world is needles but I took the whole IV thing like a champ (until, of course, they decided to move it to my other arm WHILE they were doing the epi ). They screwed up the 1st EPI and had to do another which totally knocked me out I slept for like four hours at 10 cm dialated. When they woke me up, I was all screwed up from all the meds they gave me. So on top of being exhausted, loopy and mad craving a Coke, I couldn't feel my legs AT ALL. I'm one who needs to be in control of my surroundings at all times so the fact that I couldn't lift my legs to push was making me freaked out. Yes, it was definitely like novacane but it bugged me out. I was paranoid that I would never feel them again. I felt so helpless. Even after it started to wear off (which it did pretty quickly after birth), I was freaked because they were tingly, etc.
I'm not saying all experiences were like mine, but for me it wasn't something I was too down with

Then I'm a nut too because I thought the epidural was the best thing ever!! Maybe because I was in labor for so long too but I didn't even notice or care one bit about what body parts I could feel or not. I was just sooooo happy to have pain relief and the contractions were no longer nearly as bad. Seriously, I could have kissed my anesthesiologist. The epidural was WONDERFUL!

No wonder we get along so well!! We are both a bunch of nuts
Yeah I didn't care or even think about what body parts I couldn't feel.. or if I would ever feel them again for that matter

Re: Question for those of you who've had an epidural
I actually found getting the epidural to be by far the most pain I experienced during my labor. I guess I'm in the minority there. After it kicked in though, it was great. It worked too well though b/c I couldn't tell if I was pushing or not -- so they ended up turning off the pump.

Although Like I said above - I didn't mind the epidural...in my case it did slow down the labor. For me they stopped when I had to push it but it was over an hour before I had any feeling back - so I was pushing and had no clue what I was doing because I felt nothing. The second hour - I had half the feeling back and it wasn't as bad. By the third hour it was worn off and by then I was just determined to get that baby out - that I didn't feel the pain at all!! But that being said I would get an epi again in a second!!!!! Setadol - not sure if I would though - that stuff made me too loopy!

Re: Question for those of you who've had an epidural
I don't really remember feeling numb from my waist down. I just remember I felt great because the pain had gone away. I was sooooo relaxed afterwards. Believe me, you won't care how it feels as long as it helps the pain of the contractions.

Re: Question for those of you who've had an epidural
The epi didn't freak me out cuz I knew what to expect and I was fine with it and I was glad I got it cuz Iwas able to get some rest. The contractions were really bad and I triedto go without the epi but couldn't do it.
I THINK THE EPI IS THE BEST JMO

No you are not alone. The pricess of actually getting the epidural was the WORST pain of the whole process for me - but in the long run I think the few seconds of horrible pain is better then hours of contractions pain

What exactly is the pain like?
I thought it was just a pinching and slight burning that only lasts a second?
