Question for those who had DC that didn't sleep thru the night until later....
....How did you know when they were just waking out of habit vs really being hungry?? I asked my ped this, and she said I will just know. Hmm....he is 7 months today and I am just not sure. He goes to sleep on his own, but wakes 1-2x/night to eat (sleeps from 6p-6a). I am not afraid to let him cry, but I am scared to let him cry if perhaps he really is hungry? I have tried sending my DH in---sometimes he will go back to sleep---but more often he just wakes back up 10-20 minutes later (and then I feed him).

when the waking became random. Once he phased out a bottle that was it. SO if he woke up i knew it wasn't due to hunger. Plus is waking was just random times.

You could try sending your DH in with a bottle of water. Doing that for a few nights will usually cut out a feeding. He'll realize that it's not worth waking for a sip of water.
At this point, your DC doesn't really need the nutrition through the night just as we don't. It's likely more habit than anything else.

unfortunately the bottle is an issue, I BF and he will only take a bottle of BM if he takes it at all. He does drink water out of a sippie, but I doubt that would work in the middleof the night----I think we will probably have to go cold turkey

No advice just some
My DS is 5 months now and still wakes up 2-3 times a night. I'm wondering the same thing. My pediatrician said up until 6 months feed him at night and that if he was still waking up at night then we'd talk about it at his 6 month appointment. We're a few weeks away, but I don't see any progress. In fact he was sleeping longer stretches a few weeks ago.

DD is 8 1/2 months and doesn't sleep more than 5 consecutive hours at a time. For me, I try to get to her as soon as she stirs but before she stands up in her crib because once she is standing she is WIDE awake and I have to take her out of her crib to rock her back to sleep (yes, bad habit, but whatever). If I pick her up and her head falls on my shoulder and her eyes close, I know she isn't hungry. If she stays awake and is looking at me and continues crying I know she is hungry.
HTH!

Re: Question for those who had DC that didn't sleep thru the night until later....
This was us as well. My ped told us at 5 months to do CIO and cut it out because it was habit. And it was, and he would eat a TON a night and not so much during the day.
We did it at 5 months and it worked after a while, then at 7 months he got sick, we went on vacation and he got sick again, so we just ended up going in to feed him til he was a year
We finally just got rid of bottles, and since he wasnt on formula anymore, I no longer felt guilty that he wasn't getting enough food, KWIM?
But I'd do it now....it is hard when they are older!
