Question for those whose DC had milk allergies/sensitivities?

Did you do official allergy testing to confirm or rule out the allergy or did you just start trying out dairy after a year old?

Our GI said that DS can have allergy testing when he's 11 months old and I definitely want to wait for that. I am personally not comfortable with trying out dairy and seeing if it affects him or not.

Just curious what others did/are planning on doing.

Thanks!

I actually had DD test at 5.5 months. My ped agreed to it and I am so glad I did because we didn't know what was going on with her. It turned out that she did infact have a diary and egg allergy. Once I cut those things out of my diet she was fine.

Re: Question for those whose DC had milk allergies/sensitivities?

We put Kaydyn on Similac Sensitive when she was about 2 weeks old.

At 6 months we tried yogurt and she immiediately got an awful rash and was extremely gassy. Didn't give her yogurt again.

At 1yr we tried to transition to milk and after the 1st bottle of a little bit of milk/mostly formula she developed a horrible rash again. The ped said we could leave her on formula, go to lactaid milk, or try soy milk. We decided to keep her on formula and then transitioned a few months later REALLY slowly.

We never had any testing done or anything but we knew she wasn't allergic to milk, she just couldn't process lactose.

We brought DD to an allergist really young... I think around 6 weeks and then again at 5 months. At her 1 year visit when they did her blood work they tested the blood for allergies again and that's when we learned that her issues were resolved.

My DD is almost 10 months and my ped said we will have her tested at 1 year for the milk allergy to see if it's still there.

Most of the time allergies that have GI symptoms don't show up in bloodwork. We didn't do the testing because my doctor and GI said that it is pretty inaccurate for this type of intolerance. We just introduced milk very slowly over the course of a month and watched for symptoms and then retested for blood in the poop. I did the first trial of milk at the doctors office in case there was a severe reaction. I was told that anaphylactic reactions are rare with dairy allergies.

He said 11 months? He told us 9-10 months. Hmm...I will have to ask at our next appointment in November.

DS had both blood and skin allergy tests before he was 1yo and he gets at least one of them every year to see if it's getting any better. Until the allergist sees improvement it's not even an option to the doctor or I to have him try dairy, and that will happen in the doctor's office so if he does have a severe reaction they are there to assist.

I'm way too scared to try it on my own or without having seen test results to show little to no allergy.

Good luck! Chat Icon

This is true, but we are prescribed an epi pen for me to carry and one for his school every year just in case.

We've been to 2 allergists I've never heard that before. They both wanted blood tests and it shows up, but maybe because my son has a very severe allergy? His is so bad I've been told that it's not very likely he'll outgrow it. Most kids outgrow dairy allergies by the age of 7.

Re: Question for those whose DC had milk allergies/sensitivities?

Colin is EBF but I never cut milk out of my diet (never knew and he didn't have a reaction with anything that I ate - just what he did)

At 6 months we tried yogurt and he got a rash. I called the ped and they said it's probably a sensitivity, just hold off and try again later.

At 7 months he had a tiny bit of cream cheese, same reaction. Happened a couple more times.

I took him to an allergist at 9.5 months to ck it out b/c I needed to know what to start him on when I wean off some BM sessions at 1 yr. He immediately showed he had a milk allergy so they said no dairy for now.

At 1 yr I'll have the ped do bloodwork so we have some sort of measure for the future.
