For me it was because I just had major abdominal surgery a month ago and the doctor said that I might not be healed enough to push etc. I told him if there is a chance that I would have to have a c-section anyway then I would rather not go into labor first and then have that on top of a c-section. He said fine and so we are scheduling it.

Do you know if a person is more likely to need a c-section if they have had abdomial surgeries in the past - more than 5 or 6 years ago. I have had an abdominal surgery and wonder if I may need one. Perhaps it depends on the type of surgery. Whatever it is, it is. Just curious.

I'm not sure..I think it has something to do with the strenghth of the abdominal walls or something. It might not affect you since it was so long ago but I'll only be recovering for 4 month before. Hope that helps

I only know that I had my gallbladder removed about a year & a half ago & that is not why I have to have the c-section. That wasn't an issue, though I have to say I did wonder if my expanding belly would bother the incisions! They are still pink & soft, but no problem.

Re: Question re: C-sections (for ladies having them)

Emma was an emergency C. I had the option of a VBAC or a repeat C with Jeremy. I chose a repeat C because of my fear of uterun rupture for me, inability to use pitocin, need for a repeat C anyway.

I was induced due to medication that I take, I always knew a c-section was a good possibility and I did wind up with one. I think I will have one with my next as well, It just worked out that way for me. It worked out well and I have no regrets Chat Icon

I am absolutely dreading my scheduled c-section but I have had two back surgeries and a lumbar spinal fusion as well as other herniations that are not fused. I would never have scheduled one if I didn't have to and if my doctor's didn't recommend it.

Please, ladies, do not assume that a woman who has a C-section on her first pregnancy does so by choice. I knew before I was pregnant that I would need a C-section and I got 3 doctors opinions just to make sure. What baffles me is why insurance would cover it if it was elective.

Actually, I think the question was very much directed at people who chose to, not people who had to have them for medical reasons, even for a first child.

You're probably right, but the original post said specifically that more and more people have C-sections on first pregnancies, right after asking why people have elective C-sections. The implication was that a C-section on a first pregnancy must be a choice, not mandatory. Honestly, I do not know if I would understand the need for a scheduled C-section if not for my medical history.

Actually, I have given this more thought. One of the reasons for the incease in C-sections in first pregancies is that women who have had prior uterine surgeries often need C-sections. In the past, you did not hear about these women having C-sections because many of them had hysterectomies before having the chance to have children. Chat Icon Something to think about.

Re: Question re: C-sections (for ladies having them)

To add to my own thread...just got back from doc appt.

I asked about c-sections and he said some women do choose it and that as a doctor if its requested, he cannot argue or elect not to have it done. Most women do it at the point of childbirth (in pain, dialated but not enough etc. )
Whatever, Im not a doc...I was just asking and looks like the majority of ones who do have c-sections have a pre exisiting or medical condition that requires it.

I just have known a few people who have c-sections opposed to vaginal birth.
Just curious why was all.

A friend of mine had abdominal surgery - 2 years later she gave birth vaginally to her daughter.

I can't imagine wanting one if you didn't need it. I ended up with one, but I'm not jumping at the chance to go through it again next time around!

Re: Question re: C-sections (for ladies having them)

maybe I in in the minority here, but my baby was measuring big, I was given the option of c-section, took it and never looked back.

It was the easiest 11 minutes. Recovery was a breeze. Not a single complication. I thought the whole experience was beautiful. No stress. No pain. I think since I had time to mentally prepare for it, rather then emergency, that also made a difference. I would think after pushing and pushing, to then be faced with c-section is draining.

My next baby will be a scheduled c-section. Nothing in me even wants to attempt VBAC

my doctor will not do a c-section or induce, "just b/c someone wants too", she will only do it if their is an issue and you cant go through the delivery naturally,

I am impressed that you found your section to be this easy. Personally, I found the surgery to be stressful. Knowing that it is major surgery and not beautiful whatsoever. And no pain??? Ugh... my recovery from both my c-sections was ANYTHING but pain-free. I am NOT looking forward to another surgical birth... surgery scares me, and the recovery stinks especially when you have other children at home.

However, its true, that every womans experience is different. I mourned for a long time that I would never actively get to push my children out into the world.

I already had my baby, but I actually had a c/s with my first. I opted to NOT have it this time around, b/c it was the worst thing I ever went thru! I ended up needing it anyway, b/c my son was transverse and I still regret it. I would much rather have gone thru labor instead of still being in pain almost 4 weeks after the birth Chat Icon
