Question regarding Government Jobs
If you take a test for a government job, and 30 people all get a 95 on the test, but they rank the list alphabetically... so it's something like this...
Last name beginning with "A" (Position 1 on list) Last name beginning with "B" (Position 2 on list) Last name beginning with "C" (Position 3 on list) and so on...
How do they "pick" who to interview? Do they just go down the alphabetic list? That seems unfair to me (like people with a T has a smaller chance of being interviewed just because of their last name?)?
Anyone have any insight to this process? Thanks!!!!

Re: Question regarding Government Jobs
Is there a chance that there are other deciding factors besides the test?
I work for the department of Labor. I know that when we used to give a test, it was just one component of our hiring process. Resume and background was taken into consideration, as was gov't tenure, military background, disability, etc.
For example, someone that got a 75 on the exam but was in the military for 5 years could get an interview before someone that scored 100.
Not sure if this answers your question or not....

Re: Question regarding Government Jobs
if 30 people got a 95 on the test, and they are down to the score of 95... they will send a canvass letter to all 30 people. 25-50% won't even respond to the letter. some won't qualify for other reasons. some will tank at the interview. the number dwindles down. and with a job like that, 9 times out of 10, there's more than one vacancy anyway.

This is correct. In addition, for the state, the exam are statewide even though the position may be for Long Island, someone who scored 95, who lives in Albany would not want to relocate ,then they go down the list.

Re: Question regarding Government Jobs
I took the Civil Service test last year. I got canvassing letters all over the state - some counties I never even heard of. I denied ones that were not close to home and deferred interviews of the closer locations until AFTER my maternity leave would be up so I wouldn't lose out on leave.
