Questions about AFP test
I am having my AFP test this week and am very worried about it, esp the neural tube defect portion of the test.

Re: Please help, questions about AFP test (and it's relation to the Ultrascreen)
My results for the Ultra Screen came back normal but I still did the Quad Screen. When my results came back they didn't give me specific numbers, they just said everything looks great and my results were normal.

Re: Please help, questions about AFP test (vs Ultrascreen)
If you are just getting the afp you won't get any addtl test for DS. The quad screen is the one with the addtl other three parts. I think some docs do the afp if ultrascreen came back normal but my doc does the quad bc it gives them a few more percentage points of accuracy with the DS. When my office called with results I asked for numbers bc I thought they would also be a ratio and they weren't so I had no idea what they meant but were told they were good. My ratios did change for DS though.
Its totally normal to be nervous but I am sure you will be totally fine!

Thanks for explaining that Katie! See that's why I am confused. I think I asked my dr if it was the "quad screen" or the "triple" Screen and I could swear he said no but I am not sure really what he said. That's why I want to know more so I can be sure I know what he is talking about.
Wouldn't it be wise to do the quad or the triple screen, even if one had good ultrascreen results? What would make a dr just do the AFP alone? Do you know?
Also do you know if they consider the ultrascreen more accurate than the triple or quad screen?

Yeah, I would just clarify what you are getting. I asked if it was necessary to get the quad screen when my ultrascreen results came back well, and my doc said while it's not necessary she likes to do it because the ultrascreen can detect up to X% (i don't want to quote numbers because I can't remember them exactly) of potential DS/trisomy cases, but coupled with the quad screen it increases that % by a few points. It gives them a fuller picture. I'm not sure which is considered "more" accurate, I just know that when they are integrated together they give a more realistic figure. This is her frame of mind - another doctor may feel that if the ultrascreen came back great there is no need for the triple/quad and just do the AFP.
I should mention that I specifically opted for the ultrascreen. Based on my factors (age, family history, etc) my doc said she really didn't think I needed it. (They don't seem to offer it as widely here in CT as they do on LI, at least not at my office). But I chose to do it for peace of mind. Had I not opted for it, I would have only had the quadscreen, which she said would still be a good indicator of potential issues.
Talk to the doc - the difference between the AFP and the quad is like taking an extra vial of blood, so if you feel better getting it done, ask him for it. Every doc is different, so ask him his rationale is behind choosing to do/not do certain things.
