Questions about giving birth at NSUH Manhasset
Hey, if anyone has given birth there before and wants to answer a few questions I would be grateful!
How many people are allowed to be with you during the actual birth? I know it is probably just DH if it's a c-section but can you have more than one person if it is vaginal?
What is the deal on getting a private room? Do you tell them you want one when you show up for labor and delivery? When the baby is already out? Or is it something you sort of set up beforehand, even though you don't know when you'll pop.
Is it REALLY $800/night? Or are there more reasonable rooms?
Lastly, is there a limit on visitors?
Was DH allowed to sleep there w/ you?
Did they let you keep the baby in the room if you wanted? Esp. if you bfed?
TIA!!

Re: Questions about giving birth at NSUH Manhasset
I know its expensive to have a private room but sharing a room isnt bad and u may be lucky enough to get a nice roommate. I actually found it helpful to have a roommate. Really all that you are focusing on is your excitement of having the baby and its just for a few short days. Didnt find a private room necessary. yes they limit visitors especially if that wing is very busy. Usually had about 4 or 5 at the most at a time. Yes DH could sleep in the recliner, some rooms only had rocking chairs for DH to sleep on but they do recommend that DH goes home for the evening(after you already had the baby). I would recommend letting the baby sleep in the nursery at night-- they will bring u the baby for the feedings. They will also bring baby back and forth to you whenever u want. U really need a few hours sleep during the night and this helps!!! I let baby stay in the room for the first night and then I got smart. I let baby go to nursery and they brought DS to me at 4 am for a feeding. I BF'd but had to supplement a bit with a bottle. The hospital staff was amazing in every aspect!! Im having DD there this november.

My answers are based on my experience from Feb. 2008, so some things may have changed:

How many people are allowed to be with you during the actual birth?
If it is vaginal, then two people are allowed during the birth.
What is the deal on getting a private room? Do you tell them you want one when you show up for labor and delivery? When the baby is already out? Or is it something you sort of set up beforehand, even though you don't know when you'll pop.
I think you can tell them at admitting or even after you deliver - people change their minds. But remember, it's on a first come, first serve basis, so the private rooms may all be taken.
Is it REALLY $800/night? Or are there more reasonable rooms?
I forget the prices, but I think my friend (who just delivered there) said it was more like $700/night
Lastly, is there a limit on visitors?
Yes (I want to say 3 or 4), but they never really enforced this with my family. We had about 5 or 6 people at all times b/t both sets of parents and sisters!
Was DH allowed to sleep there w/ you?
Yes, but only if your roomate agrees to it. My roomate had asked me if her DH could sleep over. I really didn't want him to, but I felt awkward saying no. My DH went home at night so he could get a good night sleep (at least one of us should be well rested!)
Did they let you keep the baby in the room if you wanted? Esp. if you bfed?
Yep, you could keep the baby in the room with you, or just ask the nurses to bring DC to you during feedings. I BF and opted to have DD sleep in the nursery. The nurses would bring her to my room every 3 hours to eat. I wouldn't have been able to sleep with her in the room b/c I would probably would have just stared at her or been worried if she was okay.

Re: Questions about giving birth at NSUH Manhasset
I just delivered my triplets at NSUH 3 weeks ago. I had csection so only DH was allowed in room but once I was in recovery I had a bunch of visitors. As far as private room you need to set that up before you get admitted and it started at 600.00 a night so NOT worth it I felt. Sharing wasnt to bad but ask for a window my room was great it overlooked a garden and waterfall. I thought the staff was great and they didnt bother me about the amount of visitors in the room and I always had people there and DH stayed 2 nights with me. I would tell you to let the baby sleep in the nursery and just have them bring you the baby if you are going to be feeding them yourself. Good luck to you.

Re: Questions about giving birth at NSUH Manhasset
I haven't had my baby there yet, but I did go to the hospital tour a few weeks ago, and this is what they told us.
How many people are allowed to be with you during the actual birth? I know it is probably just DH if it's a c-section but can you have more than one person if it is vaginal? ---Up to 3 not including DH.
What is the deal on getting a private room? Do you tell them you want one when you show up for labor and delivery? When the baby is already out? Or is it something you sort of set up beforehand, even though you don't know when you'll pop. ---When you are being admitted you should let them know your interested in a private room, and it's based on availability.
Is it REALLY $800/night? Or are there more reasonable rooms? ---It's $500 - $1700/night depending on the type of private room.
Lastly, is there a limit on visitors? ---They said no more than 5 and no children unless it's a sibling of the baby.
Was DH allowed to sleep there w/ you? ---Yes.
