Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I also had a wisdom tooth pulled w/ just novacaine. I am sure it is different for everyone, but for me, the whole thing took ten minutes and I just took Advil after. I have to do it again in a couple of weeks, and while I am nervous, I am all for staying awake. I also brought my iPod and that way I was distracted.

I am definitely planning on bringing the iPOD - I'm not so scared of the pain afterwards, definitely not looking forward to it - pain sucks but it will either be bad or not so bad and either way, I'll get through it - more worried about the actual procedure and bugging out and pain during that/.

Dentist stuff again? All this talk about the dentist gives me "agida".
I'd get KNOCKED THE F OUT if I were having a tooth pulled. Are you crazy? That's the ONLY way to go!

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
i have had two different experiences with having wisdom teeth pulled. for one wisdom tooth, which was impacted, i had laughing gas and novocaine. for the other, i had just novocaine. both of them did not hurt in the least and i have NO threshold for pain. i preferred the novocaine by itself because i did not feel weird or lightheaded afterwards and i could just get up and go. either way, i understand your fear!

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
was with DW getting tooth pulled when i asked dr. to look at this 1 tooth..he looks and said i should get my wisdom tooth pulled also...so once dw finish, i went in the chair, awake and got 2 yanked out on her appt.
its not a big deal. you will just feel them pushing, pulling and then, the tooth is out.
i agree with other posters, stay awake, come out of being knocked is messy from what i seen.

Not to scare you, but I would never get knocked out again! Although I went under for two tooth extractions when I was younger and came out, screaming and crying, but came out, I know two people that did not. One happens to be my Grandma... and it happened today

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I had a baby tooth pulled last year and I wasn't knocked out. It didn't hurt at all and took 2 seconds. But I didn't have any roots so it was pretty easy.
I had my wisdom teeth pulled both ways, but they were impacted. In that case I reccomend being knocked out. Laughing gas is GREAT!!!! Don't be afraid of it.

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I had a tooth pulled in March and to be honest, you do not need to be knocked out. The numb the area and you feel nothing put perhaps a little pressure. The pulling itself did not hurt; about 3 hours after thew pulling it started to hurt. So my recommendation - do not get knocked out.

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I was knocked out when I had my wisdom tooth removed. I honestly didn't think I could stand being awake and seeing someone go into my mouth with things to rip my tooth out. So I wanted to be put under. I clearly recall lying in the chair and then nothing. I woke up briefly to go into the "recovery" room and slept a while. Then I went home and slept more. I was fine afterwards and just swollen from the tooth extraction.

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I have had teeth pulled with IV sedation (4 wisdom teeth at once) and without (2 teeth at one 'sitting' with novacaine).....i thought the IV sedation was fine, i don't remember a thing and I had no after affects. when i was awake, I did't necessarily feel pain, but I was aware of the pulling, etc. If it were me, if I had to have one tooth(non wisdom) pulled, i probably wouldnt get the IV sedation, just the novacaine/what ever else they give, but everyone is different........good luck

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
yea see i have 2 wisdome teeth that need to come out and i'm TERRIFIED of going to the oral surgeon for the same reason as you!!!! im terrified at the thought of being put to sleep but also terrified that they wont numb me enough and i'll feel the entire thing!
after reading this thread, i think im gonna go under and just sleep it off. i've only been put to sleep once for outpatient surgery (endoscopy) and it wasnt bad except that i started to wake up in the middle of the procedure and saw the tv screen showing my insides!!!
hopefully it'll be better this time!

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I had three out of four wisdom teeth taken out so far.
1 - Got knocked out, woke up crying without knowing why. Nurse said that was normal. Emotions under control within 15 minutes, no pain afterwards, only soreness. I didn't fill the pain med script because I didn't need it.
2. - Didn't get knocked out (no anesthesia available), had sweet air and novocaine instead, very bad idea. They broke my tooth in my mouth and picked out the pieces out of the socket. I still felt pain, recovery was horrible, lived on pain meds for a while.
3. - Two weeks ago, I had an emergency removal by Dr. Mazzei on Broadway in Massapequa. Everyone was super nice. He told me the drug he was going to use to put me under, even (I forgot the name). I watched him push the drug and the next thing I knew, I woke up. No grogginess, no crying, no soreness, no pain. If there wasn't gauze packed in my cheek, I wouldn't have believed that they had done anything.
I "recovered" on a bed for 15 minutes with two refreezable ice packs they gave me, handed me my prescription already filled out, and I was on my way.
I took one pain pill as a precaution (Darvocet) but I didn't need it. Recovery has been a snap.
If I ever need to do this again, I'm going back to these guys. The doc even called me from his house when I got nervous about something 2 hours later and was very nice.
I did pay for it all up front ($400.) and I have to stop back there sometime this week to pick up my x-ray so I can submit it to my husband's insurance company.
Good luck, whatever you decide. I'm sure you'll be just fine very soon!

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I had my wisdom tooth removed with just novicane and it was fine. I didn't see the need for uneeded anestheisia (ok so that spelling was not even close). I was able to drive home and felt fine afterwards. I hate the recovery after being knocked out.

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at one time. Wasn't knocked out, just major novacane. I didn't feel a thing, just slight pressure. actually the oral surgeon didn't ask which I wanted. Just gave me the shots.
You'll be fine!!!!

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I am a HUGE baby. Like you I was crying, shaking, having heart palpitations for the weeks leading up to the extraction.
Also like you- it wasn't a wisdom tooth.
I am deathly afraid of drugs though- so I knew that I did NOT want to be knocked out. That would have scared me more than the actually procedure.
I just got the novacaine and I did not feel a thing. Just pressure- pushing and pulling. Some of the sounds aren't great- so the suggestion someone made of bringing an IPOD is a great idea. Afterwards I had no pain at all- not even enough for an advil- and I went to work the next day.
I was glad I wasn't knocked out because as soon as it was over I was fine- no need for recovery, no feeling drugged up for hours, no need to get a ride home. All that was important to me.
Looking back it was so not as big of a deal as I thought it would be.
You will be fine! Promise!

You would probably be a mess if you were awake. I would get knocked out. I did when I had my wisdom teeth pulled- twice.

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not?
I had non-impacted wisdom teeth pulled with just novocaine. I also had a root canal on my front tooth, with the novocaine injection going into the roof of my mouth. I'd be the first to complain if there was any pain but I just do not see the reason to be knocked out for these types of procedures. Impacted or infected teeth may be a different story, as I have not experienced that.

Bump for update
I just read your update. Sedation means you will be out. They call it sedation because it's not the same as going under anasthesia for a surgical procedure in a hospital. Whenever they "put you out" in a dentist office- it's called sedation. You won't remember anything. You'll be "asleep".
If you are uncomfortable with this office and feel they are nasty- I do have a wonderful oral surgeon- but he is in Suffolk County.
This woman sounds like a piece of work!
