Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not? - UPDATE in first post
What a witch!
I have only had wisdom teeth and baby teeth removed, so my experience will not be the same for you, but you really should not feel ANYTHING at all if you are awake. Since they're telling you that you'll be sedated, I don't think you'll even remember anything, let alone feel something.
You'll be fine - try not to let your nerves get the best of you.

I just read your update.
That kind of treatment would make me reconsider going to that dentist altogether.
I have an AWESOME dentist located in Merrick that I go to - I'm DEATHLY afraid of the dentist, and I cried hysterically in his office my first time there (before making it into the exam room). When I got in, he PROMISED me that everything would be okay, and that he worked a great deal with people with dentist phobias. He was totally right. I go to the dentist regularly now (every 6 mos) for cleanings, and I completely trust him (along with his receptionists AND his dental hygenists).
Anyway, I would NOT go to that dentist's office. FM me if you want my dentist's info. He's great, and fairly young, too.

I agree with this completely. I also have a great dentist in Bellmore. Is this the first time you have been to theis dentist?

Update: So I called the woman I was supposed to call this morning - she was rude and nasty - started off by telling me she was the office manager and shouldn't be dealing with questions like this and I told her someone in her office gave me her name to call - I have to ask her three times to explain the procedure to me because she was being difficult and just kept saying - what do you want to know?
She tells me there will be novocaine - I ask if there is sweet air or anything like that and she says novocaine and sedation - so I ask her if sedation means I'm knocked out - she says - you're sedated - again, but does that mean I'm knocked out? three friggin times I have to ask her - ummm, lady isn't it obvious that I do not know what they mean by sedated which is why I am asking you???? So she FINALLY tells me that I will be very sleepy and "out of it" - whatever - way to calm my fears and give me an explanation - still don't know if it means I'm going to be completely out!
You need to have the dentist call you back.
I will tell you this, from my experience and talking to my oral surgeon -- Everyone reacts differently. Sedation is NOT the same as general anesthesia, so you won't NECESSARILY be "knocked out." It DID put me to sleep, though I woke up during the procedure. (Please remember I have a history of needing more anesthesia than most people, and this runs in my family)
Technically, you CAN be lucid (but loopy and outof it) while sedated, but you will most likely be sleeping and not remember much of anything about the procedure - if anything at all.

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not? - UPDATE in first post
I've had 2 teeth pulled recently - (not wisdom) - I had novacaine and nothing more - my oral surgeon just completely numbed the area - I didn't feel a thing - I was wide awake - all I felt is just the pressure of him getting it out - but it really was not a big deal at all.
I was very nervous with the first one - but the second was even easier because I knew what to expect.
Good Luck.
ETA: the way the "office manager" spoke to you was uncalled for and I would be hesitant about using that office at all.

Re: Questions About Having A Tooth Pulled - To Be Knocked Out or Not? - UPDATE in first post
Thank guys - I'm on the phone with the office manager at my regular dentist's office - the ones who referred them - my dentist is my old best friend's dad and has known me since I'm a little kid - treats me and DH like family - I also know that they recommend a TON of patients to this guy so I want to let them know. OK - just got off the phone with o.m. at my dentist's office - she spoke to the rude lady - lol - she made her explain everything and she said that after speaking to her that they were going to take very good care of me. They told her it would be IV sedation but that I was not going to be completely out - I would be sedated, very relaxed, very numb - but still "awake" - she said that if the dentist spoke to me and gave me a direction - I would be conscious of this and able to follow his direction - she called it "twilight sedation." Now why couldn't the dumb o.m. there tell me any of this - what if I was scared of needles? she didn't even tell me it was IV sedation.
The dumb o.m. there told my o.m. "how am I supposed to answer someone's question when I don't know what they're doing" - ummm - you are the office manager - you work for an oral surgeon - when someone asks you what sedation is and what they're going to do - you better know that!!!
Sorry for the long rant but I hate when customers/clients feel like this in ANY situation - but especially working for a doctor where people were going to be very fearful coming in!
