I think the preschool post got me thinking...

What age do kids start kindergarten?

How do you enroll your child?

My DS will be 4 ( 5 in October) when he starts ...It depends on your districts birthday cut off ...I believe ours is Dec 1, so my DD who is a January baby will be 5 going on 6 when she starts...

DS was in pre-k so his teacher told us to call the Board of Ed and find out the registration date which was about 8 months or so before school starts

I am not handling this well at all

From what I recall....most districts do registration in about November.

The cutoff date for most districts is December 1.

I am in the process now of enrolling Genevieve (her birthday is 11/19). She will only be 4 when Kindgarten starts this September.

Registration varies on the district. We are moving, but I started enrolling her in our current district before we realized we were moving.

Registration already started back in March for both districts. In Rocky Point, you have to fill out an online form, then they call and make an appt in which you have to submit paperwork. I didnt get past that step, but some of the moms in G's dance class told me they had to take their dd's back for an "interview" in which the moms were not in the room.

I havent started enrolling her yet in Kings Park because I need to get a copy of our house deed before I can proceed.

Kindergarden for Ayla and Lucas is 2012-2013.
They will be 5-turning 6 the end of the school year.
In March/April of 2012 your school (assuming he is going to public) will have pre registration and that's where you submit all the paper work like address, medical record (immun. shots) and birth cert etc.

I honestly forgot if I called the schoool to have a packet mailed out to me or if it was
automatically mailed to me.


Thinking about it depresses me!

From my experience, most kindergarten children are 5 or about to turn 5. There are a few late babies who are almost 6 at the start of the year. I didn't have a child near the cut off, so I can't be absolutely certain, but I believe the cutoff was November - meaning that all the children in kindergarten had to be 5 or turn 5 by the end of November.

Registration for our district started in April. We moved into the district in May - just before Robbie turned 5 and did a late registration in June. Noah was registered in the April before his 5th birthday (July). The process was super simple - we proved our residency, they gave a little screening test and a few weeks later we got information regarding parent orientation. A couple of weeks before school started we got a packet that gave child orientation and class details.

DS starts Kindegarten in September. :(

He will be 4 when he starts...but will turn 5 a few weeks in. He is a "late" birthday and will always be one of the youngest in his class.

The cut off for my district is Dec 1st.

Registration began in February- I just kept looking on the districts website and they posted the information about when registration was, and what was needed in order to register.

After he was registered we got a letter in the mail in March, about Kindegarten orientation in April.....and at orientation we scheduled a screening (which was this past Monday)...

down here, cutoff is 8/31.

josh is going to be around for a long time. by the time he goes off I think it will be tears of joy as he already gets up every am and asks if today is the day he can go on a school bus.

he will be close to 6 by the time he starts since he has a december bday.

Wow...I always thought kindergarden was 5 going on 6 but I see from the posts some DC's are only going to be 4 going on 5

Ang in our area I think registration is in November (I couldbe wrong but I remember reading this somewhere). So I am guessing we would register the boys November 2011 to start kindergarten 2012. They will be 5 1/2.

They both started at 5 years old. Registration was the January beforehand. You can register at any time, so don't stress about it if you've missed it. You can call them & they'll send you the forms.

They do screening & then orientation a few times, so you'll want to go to them to help ease the transition. Our were in May & late August/early Sept.

You have to go to your districts administrative offices with birth certificates for your children and get on the "district census", that way they will mail you all the information when you need it.

Our district cutoff is 12/1 and the registration date is in January. Every year in the fall our elementary school sends postcards to all homes that don't have children attending in the district with info on who and when to call to get registration information if you had a child that would be starting K in September. They also provide that info to all the local pre-k programs for them to post and I think they posted it in the local paper as well as on their website. Then about a month later they sent out a packet with all the forms and info on the orientation sessions.

In our district the orientations are run by the school PTA, so each elementary school does them differently. One school has 2 sessions (and the 2nd is just a bus ride), our school does 6 sessions and the third elementary school does 7 or 8.

DS will start full day Kindegarten September 2011. He will turn 5 a few weeks after school starts. I am beside myself. How the heck did this happen???????

I have no idea when pre-registration is. I am planning on skipping it so he doesn't have to go!!!! Ugh, I am not ready for this and he has another year to go

Well it's a long way off and I hope it doesn't come too fast but my DD will turn 5 just a few weeks into Kindergarten on Sept. 19th. I believe the cut off in my district is in November.

so miki will start in setpember of 2012 when she is 5 1/2

I'm in Bellmore - registration was in January and screenings in March. The cutoff here is 12/1. I got no letter, no info whatsoever mailed/sent to me and I am registered with the schools since my son gets speech therapy thru the schools. They did send out some letters to some preschools - I think- mine did not get the letter-i think universal pre-K providers got it. The kids who are already in the school system got letters sent hoeme with them. The moms at my sons preschools got letters from their older kids and gave me a copy of the letter. My son had his orientation ysterday - they grow up too fast!!!
