Ang in our area I think registration is in November (I couldbe wrong but I remember reading this somewhere). So I am guessing we would register the boys November 2011 to start kindergarten 2012. They will be 5 1/2.

NYS's cutoff is 11-30/12-1; NJ's is earlier
Registration should be announced at the public library and in the school calendar mailed to you in the summer.
some people send their children to private kindergarten to push the kid ahead (if born in Dec/Jan) a year; some people red-shirt their child and hold them back a year if they are born later Oct/Nov.
We were registered at UPK, so K was really easy. After you register you will start getting tons of announcements.
