Question...to stain or not to stain a cedar fence?

We live in a very wooded, open type neighborhood, where everyone's backyards kind of meet, but there are lots of trees so you have privacy. Because we have two little ones and a new puppy, we NEED a fence. It's being installed in 3 weeks! Chat Icon

We're getting a 4 foot high cedar picket fence. My question is, should we stain it?? If the fence place stains it, basically the cost will double. Chat Icon We can rent a thingy to spray paint (sort of?) the stain on for a lot less, I *think*. Supposedly the fence will last 10 years without the stain/seal, and 20 years with it. However, the fence isn't that great, it's all we can afford at the moment though. So maybe in 10 years I will WANT a new fence?? I don't know....what do you think?

Re: put down a deposit today for a fence, and a question??

can you order the fence first - then stain it when it is not installed and then have them install it? that's what my mom did

I would stain it yourself. It will look nicer and will last longer.

We just stained our cedar deck and it really isnt too bad. It just takes a little time but it is not difficult at all.

i never stained our cedar fence it is in 13 years and i've never had a problem with it. cedar ages out to a nice silvery color and blends in great with the trees behind the house

I think cedar is supposed to last forever on it's own. If you stain it, you will end up having to reastain it every few years. If you don't, it will turn a greyish color, but last just as well. It all depends on what you want to look at in the futureChat Icon
